The air force was formed to fight for national security and protect America's citizens. The first plane to fly in combat was an F-4 Phantom II fighter from the 309th Fighter Squadron stationed at Fort Worth Army Air Field. On February 14, 1942, the 359th Fighter Wing (Fighter) was activated at Fort Bragg and became operational with P-51 Mustangs. The 358th Fighter Squadron (P-38 Lightnings) arrived at RAF North Elmendorf after a long journey from Japan in late 1941. The 358th flew missions against Luftwaffe aircraft over Europe during World War II and is credited with downing three Nazi planes. In 1945, the squadron converted to jet fighters and flown operations against Japanese forces in Okinawa before returning home on September 9, 1945. In 1951 when Korea War began the United States Air Forces entered into a federal partnership with South Korea which led to Operation Frequent Wind which saw 2,000 USAF personnel assigned as advisors and trainers to Korean military forces. In 1972 General David Goldfein assumed command of USAF Pacific Command and directed American air power operations throughout Southeast Asia including support for President Richard Nixon's secret invasion of Cambodia that year. It was during this time that General Goldfein received his nickname "The Flying general" because he could be counted on to lead flights into battle despite poor weather conditions or other constraints preventing him from doing so effectively. Throughout these years there have been many upgrades and modifications made to various types of aircraft used by USAF such as the Boeing 747 passenger jetliner which replaced Douglas DC-8s beginning in 1977; Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons which were equipped with stateoftheart offensive capabilities beginning in 1990; Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS airborne warning systembeginning in 1992; Hellenic AIM 10 Albatros missiles Beginning in 1996; Northrop Grumman EA-6B Prowlers electronic warfare systemsbeginning in 1998; McDonnell Douglas MD-81A Starfighter aerial refueling tanker beginnining service starting 2003).
