The Spartanburg Air Force Base, located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, has a rich air force history. The base is home to the 514th Airlift Wing and was originally established on 3 December 1943 as the 514th Bombardment Squadron. The squadron was redesignated on 18 October 1944 as the 414th Bombardment Group and activated on 9 November 1944 at RAF Cheltenham. From 1 January 1945 until its dissolution in May 1946, the group served with RAF Noemfoor in Netherlands. On 25 May 1946, the group became part of United States Air Forces Korea (USAF Korea) when it was transferred from RAF Noemfoor to USAF operating under Eighth Air Force. It arrived at Inchon Airport on 15 June 1946 and began operations supporting United Nations forces fighting together against Japan during World War II. After hostilities ended, the group operated from Inchon until its disbanding in September 1952. The 414th Bombardment Group's last assignment was flying McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom aircraft for USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC). Withdrawing from SAC control on 31 March 1957, it moved to McGuire AFB, New Jersey where it continued to fly Phantoms until being disbanded there in October 1959.

Spartanburg is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 153,912 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in South Carolina and within the Greenville– Spartanburg– Union metropolitan area. It is part of the Charlotte Metropolitan Statistical Area. Spartanburg is located on both sides of the Savannah River, just north of downtown Charlotte and east of Johnson City. The first known European settler in what is now Spartanburg County was Cornelius Vanderbilt's slave trader Joshua Henshaw, who purchased land from Chief Ebenezer Scranton in 1811. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down Henshaw's plantation for refusing to give up his slaves to slavery. The townspeople rebuilt and renamed themselves Sparta after King Leonidas III of Athens' famous army that fought against Xerxes I at Thermopylae in 479 BC. In 1851, John C Scanlan bought 1/3 interest in an iron works owned by Nicholas Biddle which became one of America's leading manufacturers of wrought iron goods until its closure during World War II due to wartime production shortages. A new plant was built at this site in 1915 and named Borough Steel Works after him as a community recognition program honoring local businesses with an honored location on Pennsylvania Avenue NW between First Street NW and East Capitol Street NW across from US Supreme Court). This plant produced aircraft parts during World War II but closed due to lack of demand for aluminum products after the war ended . After being vacant for many years it reopened as Banbridge Iron & Manufacturing Co., Ltd., a heavy industrial manufacturer until ceasing operations December 3, 2006 when it merged with similarly sized Yankee Steel Corp (the two companies had been among several large steelmakers that were consolidated into one company following their merger) to form ArcoSteel Incorporated (formerly Banbridge Iron & Manufacturing Co., Ltd.). The Spartanburg area has been inhabited by the native Cherokee people for centuries. In 1775, during the American Revolutionary War, General James Forbes burned down a Cherokee village in what is now Spartanburg. The town was originally named West New Bern, but was renamed to its current name in 1831 in honor of General Andrew Jackson. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was founded, but grew rapidly due to its strategic location and position as the crossroads of several counties. Spartanburg became an important military stronghold during the Civil War because it lay on the main road between Charleston and Savannah. It also served as a supply depot for Confederate forces. On July 12, 1865, Confederate general Robert Ewell laid siege to Spartanburg; however, Union troops forced him out before he could capture it. The town continued to be occupied by Confederate forces until 1971 when it came under control of South Carolina Gov. Carroll Shelby. Since then, Spartansburg has undergone many changes including becoming an independent city government and becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Carolina.
Spartanburg was founded in 1819 as a small town on the Hiwassee River. The town grew quickly, and by 1872 it had a population of over 1,000 people. Spartanburg became an important center for cotton production, and its mills produced some of the finest cotton cloth in the South. In addition to its mills, Spartanburg also developed into a major transportation hub, with several railroads serving the community. The city hosted several large events during its early years, including the first African American election in South Carolina in 1876. Spartanburg continued to grow throughout the 20th century, becoming one of the most populous cities in South Carolina. In 1970, it became part of the newly created Columbia metropolitan area and remains an important economic engine within that region today.
