In 1824, a new constable was elected to serve until 1828 when Captains Isaac Peebles and James Aiken were appointed. From 1831-1835, Lieutenant Colonel William Hargrave served as the town's officer. In 1840, a new constable called George Fenton was appointed and he served for three years. Then in 1845, Captain Lewis Moultrie was appointed and he served for four years before being selected for retirement in 1850. In 1851-1854, Captain John Epps served as the town's officer with temporary assignments to other towns in Edgefield County until he was finally made permanent administrator of Simpsonville on October 10th of that year. In 1865-1867 Captain Samuel Morse replaced Captains Lewis Moultrie and John Epps as the town's officer with tenure lasting five years after which he retired due to age. After Captains Morse' retirement from service, LtCol William Hargrave became the acting commander of Simpsonville Police Department from 1870-1871 until Captains Hargrave's appointment as superintendent on January 1st of that year ended all internal police activity within the department effective February 15th (the date marked on present day Supplemental Police History Book). After serving as Superintendent for one year (1872), Col William Jenson assumed command effective March 15th following an election where Commodore Clifton Worthy ran against Jenson who won handily with over 90% of the vote! On July 3rd following Jenson’s assumption of command there were only 31 officers left in village with 5 licensed private detectives! However during his term there were many arrests including those made against members of local white supremacist groups such as The Ku Klux Klan! On December 6thduring Jenson’s final month in office a group known locally as “The Alamo Rangers” ambushed Constable Worthy while she was driving home from work leaving him fatally injured! It is said this attack may have been connected to prior incidents where blacks had been targetted by whites during Jenson’s tenure; however no concrete evidence exists linking these attacks specifically to Patrolman Worthy or any individual police officer….. nonetheless her death infuriated some residents who felt like their rights had not been taken seriously during this time period……..
