Simpsonville is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 and named for General David Simpson who served as a U.S. Congressman from Spartanburg County from 1834-1839. In 1865, Colonel John Dickson built the first post office in Simpsonville and named it after himself. The town grew rapidly with the opening of new businesses and residential subdivisions throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s until World War II led to its decline as an agricultural center due to GI production elsewhere in South Carolina. However, since 2000 Simpsonville has experienced significant revitalization with a focus on cultural arts, education, retail and dining opportunities as well as music venues including the now defunct fire hall which also housed The Blue Note nightclub from 1984-2006.
The first white people to live in Simpsonville were the Cartwright family. The Cartwrights founded a small town on the lower Simons River in 1819. The town was named for General James Simpson, who had fought against the British in the Revolutionary War. The town grew slowly until it became a major center of trade and commerce in South Carolina during the 1830s and 1840s. During the 1850s, Simpsonville experienced some significant growth due to its strategic location as a transportation hub between points along the coast and interior of South Carolina. This growth led to increased development around Simpsonville, including an area known as "The Granary" which became one of the most important commercial districts in south Carolina during this time period. In 1856, President James Buchanan appointed Edward Everett Hale as Secretary of State, which caused much social and economic change in South Carolina. Hale's appointment led to increased investment in education and industry throughout south Carolina, which helped drive rapid growth throughout that decade. In 1861, Confederate troops invaded South Carolina following their unsuccessful attempt to overthrow slavery within that state. As a result of this invasion, much violence and property damage occurred across southern South Carolina as Confederate sympathizers Battle-mindedly sought refuge inside of southern states where they could continue support for their cause while living freely under Confederate rule (i.e., areas such as Charleston). As a result of this chaos and destruction, many businesses and homes were destroyed or damaged within Simpsonville alone; however, despite these losses, local residents largely chose not to flee or evacuate their homes during this time period. Instead, many residents chose to stay put and fight for what they believed was right rather than leave their homes for fear that they would be forced into exile by Confederate forces if they did so].
