Simpsonville is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Simpsonville was Johnnie Waddell who built a cabin on the present site of downtown in 1828. Other early settlers included Captain Denny and his family from Kentucky and Arent Hodge from North Carolina. In 1840, Isaac Newton moved to Simpsonville with his wife Sarah and four children and purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land that he called "Newton's Landing". He built a log cabin and named it after himself. In 1847, he married Anna Rudd and settled down in Simpsonville with their six children. They raised corn, potatoes, hogs, chickens, pigs and cows until they sold their farm in 1865 to James Fenton for $2 per acre. Fenton donated the land toRichland County for use as a county seat when it was created on March 3rd, 1870 by act of Congress under the name "Columbia". Fenton also gave $10 per capita towards building an courthouse which was completed in 1875/6. The current courthouse is one of only two remaining examples of antebellum architecture in South Carolina - it replaced an earlier structure that burned down in 1868. The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the Civil War because cotton became available again as a crop after being destroyed by war damage. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, white violence against African Americans increased; this led to increased taxes on black households which helped finance white rule during Reconstruction period up until late 1920s when electricity became available making life easier for all inhabitants without contributing much to economy or social stability
Simpsonville was founded in 1814 by General James Simpson and his brother, Colonel John Simpson. The area now known as Simpsonville was named for General James Simpson. In 1865, the town of Greenville merged with Simpsonville.
