Rock Hill is located in the Upstate of South Carolina and has been around since the beginning of time. It was first inhabited by the Cherokee people and later became part of the British colony of South Carolina. The town was named for a small hill that stood in its center, whichchen (a type of corn) farmers used to cultivate. The town quickly grew into a major commercial and social center during the 1800s. Rock Hill was one of the initial centers for cotton farming in Upstate South Carolina. The industry declined during the 19th century, however, because production began to decline in areas such as Alabama and Mississippi. In 1871, Rock Hill became an independent city with its own government. In 1898, Rock Hill hosted the Third International Cotton Exhibition, which attracted attention from all over the world. The event helped create new international trade relationships and made Rock Hill a important focal point for cotton farming in Upstate South Carolina. During World War II, Rock Hill played an important role as a munitions plant responsible for producing essential war goods like gasoline and ammunition. Today, RockHill is known primarily for its cultural attractions - including its art galleries and theaters - but it also retains some significant historic landmarks such as its original cotton gin building and courthouse dating back to 1827
Rock Hill was founded in 1777 by the Reverend John Randolph and his wife, Sarah. The village grew rapidly due to its strategic location on a large tract of land that had been purchased from the Cherokee Indian tribe. In 1819, Rock Hill became part of the United States after it was acquired by President James K. Polk from Spain.
