Rock Hill is a city in and the county seat of Rock Hill County, South Carolina. The population was 59,622 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte, North Carolina metropolitan area. The first coffee beans were brought to Rock Hill by a man named John Aiken in 1824. Aiken was born in Scotland and emigrated to America because he thought it would be a better place to live than Great Britain. He began growing coffee beans on his farm near present-day downtown Rock Hill. In 1831, Elijah White opened what is now known as White’s Coffee House on Broad Street in downtown Rock Hill. This coffee house became an important figure in early African American history because it served as a meeting ground for African Americans and white people from nearby rural areas who wanted to learn about each other's cultures and traditions. Black men from the surrounding counties would come into town for business meetings or social events, and then return home to their families for dinner before continuing their journey down Broad Street to White's Coffee House again the next day. In 1866, James Baldwin bought land along FDR Boulevard (later renamed Kissinger Boulevard) between Union Avenue (now Wilkinson Boulevard) and Roosevelt Drive in southeasternRockHill County3 so that he could build a plantation called Baldwin Place3 which would become one of the most influential black businesses in the late 19th century4
Rock Hill is a small town in central South Carolina. The population was 7,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. Rock Hill is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina and has been settled since the late 17th century. It was originally known as Englishtown and then Spanishtown. The town was named for Colonel James Robertson, who bought it from the Cherokee in 1786. The first railroad to come through Rock Hill was the Charleston and Augusta Railroad in 1854. In 1865, Rock Hill became a city after being annexed by Columbia. The largest industry in Rock Hill until recently was agriculture, but this has declined due to competition from other industries such as manufacturing and service jobs elsewhere in Columbia. In recent years, rock climbing has become an important activity in Rock Hill due to its high cliffs that make for great visibility while bouldering off of them can be challenging but rewarding experiences with various grades of difficulty available on many routes within easy reach of visitors. One popular route is "The Nose" which starts at milepost 0 on US 27 just outside town limits and climbs steadily overlooking downtown before terminating near milepost 9 on SC 129 about 10 miles away from town center
