Rock Hill is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to sight and explore this area was Englishman John Smith in 1607 when he passed through what is now Rock Hill on his way from Carolina to Georgia. He named it "Hillsborough" after his home town of Hillsborough in Northumberland, England. The first permanent settler in what is now Rock Hill was James Searles who arrived in 1785 with his family from Virginia. He built a log cabin on the site of present day Mount Carmel Baptist Church and called it Searlesville. His children brought over matchboxes full of nails and pieces of wood to build churches and other buildings around their settlement including one built by Charles Goodyear which still stands today as Goodyear Chapel (now known as First Unitarian Universalist Church). In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's Expedition against the Creek Nation resulted in a bloody battle at Rock Hill which saw more than 100 killed or wounded. The town officially became an official U.S. military post on March 3, 1861 following Confederate forces' retreat from Fort Sumter during the American Civil War that began on April 12th that year. During World War II much activity took place here including production for Boeing plants at nearby Pee Dee Island and some 1,500 workers were employed at two munitions factories located around Cumberland Gap Road east of town - one producing bombs for Hiroshima and Nagasaki while the other making shells for Allied forces during Operation Overlord (the Normandy Invasion). After hostilities endedrock hill reverted back to its original plantations-based economy but continued to be significant throughout the years due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Charleston and Savannah; this contributed significantly to its current classification as a rural community with high levels of poverty despite its relatively low population density compared to larger metropolitan areas such as Columbia or Savannah
