The United States Army was founded in 1776, and the first military unit to be recruited in Rock Hill, South Carolina was the 2nd Regiment of Foot. The regiment served in the American Revolution and took part in several battles including Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1812, the 2nd Regiment of Foot was disbanded and its members were merged into the 1st Regiment of Infantry. The 1st Regiment of Infantry also served in the American Revolution and took part in several battles including Monmouth Heights, NJ and Yorktown Heights, Virginia. On July 4th, 1861, a group of men from Rock Hill Unit 3rd Brigade (2nd Division) under Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Cleburne rallied to join Confederate forces against Union forces at Fort Sumter. After years of service with distinction these men were advanced to Major General on November 9th 1861 for their distinguished service during the Civil War. After the war veterans returned home and began rebuilding their units which had been disbanded or reduced to strength. In 1932 Rock Hill Unit 5th Brigade (3rd Division) was activated as a reserve unit for use if an emergency called for it within 3 months’ time. In 1938RockhillUnit 7th Brigade (1st Division), also a reserve unit was activated and assigned to duty as an armys support battalion during World War II when Army personnel served overseas as part of various combat units such as tanks or infantry battalions. During peacetimeArmy Reserve Units are usually used for training exercises and civil defense purposes but have never been put into action since 1971 when they were redesignated as Combat Service Units

The Rock Hill Army National Guard was organized on December 15, 1861. The first unit to be raised was Company A, 1st Regiment of Artillery. The regiment served for two years in the Union Army before being mustered out on May 6, 1865. On July 4, 1892, the 1st Regiment of Artillery re- organization as the 3rd Regiment of Artillery and served until 1903 when it became a part of the 5th Infantry Division. The regiment then fought in World War I and World War II before becoming a part of the South Carolina National Guard in 1961.
Rock Hill is a small town located in the Upstate of South Carolina. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greenville County. The town was founded in 1779 by Scots-Irish immigrants and has been named for General James Rock, who fought in the American Revolution. The first post office in Rock Hill was established on October 12, 1779, and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1827, the town became a railroad junction. The first store opened in Rock Hill on December 5, 1830. By 1855, there were six stores and ninety-six businesses in Rock Hill. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down one of the stores in Rock Hill during their raid on that year's Union military depot at Meadowfield west of town. Rockhill residents voted to secede from South Carolina on April 14, 1865; they were among the last southern states to fall to Confederate forces three days later when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House south of Richmond Virginia. The courthouse which stood until 1903 was built between 1858 and 1861 by John Maney with help from local stone mason Tom Pope; it served as an important civil courthouse until it burned down in 1903. A new courthouse was built between 1909 and 1912 by architect Alexander Jablonski; it still serves as a court house today (though not as an official seat of government). Many rock hills remain standing around town including: Midway Hills (the highest hill), High Street Rocks (a series of high rocky hills overlooking downtown), Milltown Rocks (a series of low hills east of downtown), Baxter Place (an area near downtown that includes several large boulders stones used for road building), Park Place (another area near downtown), White Hall Road rocks furthest west along Whitehall Creek., Finally there is also Three Forks Bottom which sits right next to where Red Bank Creek flows into Wassaw Bayou

Rock Hill is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Rock Hill were Hugh Gibson and his family who arrived from Scotland in 1795. They built a cabin on the hill and named it after Sir Hugh Berkeley, 1st Baronet of Berkeley in England. In 1827, John Randolph became the first white settler in what would become Rock Hill when he purchased land from Neil Johnston for $100 US dollars. He brought with him his wife Sarah Randolph and their two children. The village site was surveyed by Captain Ebenezer Greene between 1829 and 1830 and named for Colonel John Randolph who had been sent to Spartanburg County to survey roads and boundary lines for General Andrew Jackson’s new state government. In 1839, Rev Elijah Kelley established an Episcopal church at the mouth of Chickamauga Creek which became one of the earliest African American churches in America. One year later, Rev James Meeks founded a Methodist church on Church Street which also served as the village store until 1865 when it moved to its present location across from Post Office Park (now known as Bioengineering Learning Commons). In 1850, when Confederates began occupying Southern states during the American Civil War, many residents fled to North Carolina or other parts of South Carolina but some remained to help man Confederate artillery batteries along Chickamauga Creek where they made significant contributions towards Confederate victory over Union forces that summer. After Lincoln’s assassination on April 12th 1865 and Ulysses S Grant becoming President of the United States five days later, most people returned home except for a few hundred troops who continued occupation until early November 1865 when all Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House following Robert E Lee’s surrender speech “I have come hereto say that I am ready to sell my life as freely as any other man has sold his lifeblood hitherto given unto you” (New York Times). With this successful Union victory over Confederate forces throughout South Carolina came great changes within the state including Reconstruction which started immediately followingLee’s surrender; black men were now allowed to serve openly in local police departments while white men were barred from holding any public office or owning land beyond their own homes without pay; voting rights for African Americans were finally granted effectiveJanuary 15th 1870; education opportunities improved with statehood giving freedmen access to high school diplomas and four years later free public college degrees such as those received by whites beginning January 1st 1881; banking services soon followed including organized burglary gangs called “screaming jacks” formed specifically to disrupt railroad operations resulting in dozens of arrests during 1886 alone resultant in several convictions including jail terms for many individuals involved) This wealth created by Reconstruction benefitted both black entrepreneurs such as Elijah Kelley while also creating problems for white business owners since much property still remained unoccupied after reconstruction ended leaving many companies unable or unwilling To renew contracts/ partnership relationships with blacks once they obtained full legal rights Rockhill was renamed Greenville County on February 3rd 1931 following an agreement between then Greenville Mayor Rufus Hinchey Sr., Congressman Hiram Revelle (R-SC), county commissioners Ethel Heyward (D) & Charles Burchill (L) & State Senator Forney Peebles (D), all Republicans attorneys general at that time In 1968 Rock Hill was reestablished as an independent municipality adjacent to Spartanburg County through passage of a Special Act entitled "An act authorizing separate municipal government within Spartanburg County" drawing upon SC Constitution Article XII §2 . This act provided: "That if said township should be annexed into either city or county thereupon said township shall continue under this special law." On December 10th 1971 annexation occurred making Rock Hill an official City/County combination having total population over 11K populace making it one of only three cities/counties within South Carolina with more than 12K citizens according to2010 census results
Rock Hill was founded in 1795 by the South Carolina Colony. It became a part of the United States in 1794. The town was named for General Nathaniel Pemberton, who had led an army against the Creek Indians.
