Port Royal was founded in 1770 by the brothers John and James Johnston, who named their town after their father, the British general Sir James Johnston. The town grew rapidly during the American Revolution, and in 1795 it became a U.S. colony. In 1801, it became a city under the terms of the United States Constitution. During World War II, Port Royal functioned as an air-raiding base for Confederate forces in South Carolina. After the war, Port Royal declined severely due to economic decline and social unrest. However, recent redevelopment has stabilized the community and brought new life to its streetscapes.
