The United States Navy has been providing service in Port Royal, South Carolina since 1795. The Naval Station at Charleston Harbour was the first naval station in the state and it served as a training ground for sailors from all over the country. Port Royal is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina and the seat of Coweta County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 2,609. It is part of the Savannah, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1749 by Captain James Cook as an isolated trading post on Pamlico Sound after his ill-fated HMS Resolution had rendezvoused with Spanish ships at nearby St. Augustine during their failed attempt to find a route to India. The post soon grew into a thriving port with its own courthouse, school and manufacturing industry. In 1838, it became the capital of Coweta County when it replaced Augusta as the county seat following Reconstruction following the American Civil War and subsequent emancipation of slaves in Georgia. In 1881, Port Royal became part of Charleston due to railroad construction through that city and its adjoining counties; however, it continued to maintain some degree of autonomy until 1959 when all local government functions were transferred to Charleston under then-County Mayor Jeptha Jenkinson's "Permanent Government Plan." During World War II, Port Royal served as one of several airfields used by United States Marine Corps Air Forces for training pilots for combatting Japan's Imperial Japanese Army (IJA). The Marines also operated an ammunition depot here from 1942 to 1945 which helped contribute significantly to Allied victory in World War II. Afterward, much major league baseball activity took place at nearby Pinckney Park Stadium from 1946 through 1957; this included games played by both clubs now known as the Atlanta Braves and Charlotte Hornets respectively Formerly known as Trustees Bank Ballpark From 1966 forward until its closure in 1988 Ports Royale was home field for then new University Of South Carolina Gamecocks Baseball team whom play their matches out there today on softball diamond named Bobby Dodd Stadium Now renamed Memorial Stadium And open To All Who Come
