Port Royal is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1731 by Hugh Chamberlayne and others as an agricultural community on the Putnam River within present-day Johnston County. In 1819, it became a separate county and in 1828 it became a state parish. The parish was abolished in 1886 and merged into Richland County. In 1875, Port Royal established its own school system which continued until 1958 when it merged with the Johnston County School District. In 1916, Port Royal's first post office opened; its last mail service ended on December 6, 1988. In 1923, Drury Lane Baptist Church was built on what is now Coulter Road to honor Revs Josiah Denny and James Caldwell who had both been killed in World War I; also built were several other churches over the years including First Presbyterian (1893), Second Presbyterian (1895), Third Presbyterian (1900), Fourth Presbyterian (1906) and Pentecostal Bible Chapel (1968). A large cotton gin facility operated from 1907 to 1927 by Jepson Brothers & Co.; this mill closed down due to competition from more efficient mills during the Great Depression but left behind some tangible evidence such as an intact brick wall near the entrance of the current town hall building that still stands today.
