The history of the Army in Port Royal, South Carolina dates back to 1778. At that time, the area was part of British South Carolina and was under French rule. The British army moved into the area in 1778 and designed a new fortification called Fort Moultrie. It was located on what is now known as Yorktown Highway. In 1781, American forces invaded British South Carolina and captured Fort Moultrie. The Americans then turned their attention to Fort Caroline which had been built by the French in order to protect strategic points around Charleston. In 1782, American forces recaptured Fort Caroline and renamed it for George Washington, Jr., Commander-in-Chief of America’s Forces in South Carolina. In 1802, the US Congress added Columbia Parish to South Carolina and Ft. Moultrie became Yorktown Garrison again. The garrison served as a training ground for artillerymen from 1802 until 1865 when it was closed down due to lack of volunteers for service at home during the Civil War. In 1865, it reopened as an arsenal where shellfire testing took place during World War II before being closed again in 1978 because of decay and other problems with the fortification system. Today, Yorktown Garrison is open to visitors who can see evidence of cannonball fire tests dating back to 1861 while also learning about how military technology has changed over time. There are also exhibits on military life in Charleston during this period as well as tours of the ammunition plant where shells are still made today
