Port Royal is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Thesettlement started as a small post office on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1736 by Captain John Smith and his group of English traders seeking to establish trade with Spanish colonies in Latin America. By 1800, about 1,000 people lived there and it had become a small farming community. On April 16, 1814, when Confederate General Pee Dee captured Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor during the American Civil War (1811-1865), Port Royal became Confederate capital city. The town prospered under Confederate rule until 1865 when it fell to Union forces after they took control of Charleston. In 1871, port royal was incorporated as a city within Pickens County and has since served as its legislative body and commercial center. In 1906 local farmers organized what would become known as "The Coastal Plain Improvement District" to improve land near the mouth of Cooper River so that it could be developed for commercial fishing and other purposes while preserving natural resources such as tidal marshes and forests adjacent to the river floodplain. The district's first director was Jno.[sic] Meeks who helped organize much of what is now known about Lowcountry ecology from field work done there beginning in the 1920s Today's downtown core around Cooper River Boulevard offers an excellent mix of old brick warehouses dating back to early 20th century seafood processing operations with new mixed-use development built since then including restaurants (such as Blue Heron), bars/nightlife venues (Pineapple Leaf) and offices/retail stores (Wine Underwater). At one time or another all seven blocks surrounding downtown have been redeveloped into some form of high end shopping precinct with large amounts of open space remaining along Cooper River Blvd., giving this area unique character not found elsewhere on similar streetscape redevelopment projects across coastal South Carolina

PORT ROYAL, SOUTH CAROLINA — For over a hundred years, Port Royal has been a historic town in the extreme southern reaches of South Carolina. Home to an active military and naval base during the Revolutionary War and later to archaeologists and historians, the town was also known for its production of slaves. Today, Port Royal is a small hamlet with a handful of residents living on farms that produce pork, chicken, and other farm animals. The local economy is based largely on fishing and tourism. The first humans to set foot in what is now Port Royal were Native Americans who lived near where the town stands today. The area was first explored by Europeans in 1699 when Captain John Smith sailed past what is nowPort Royal Harbor on his voyage from North America to India. By 1720, all but one island at the harbor had been claimed by Britain as part of Newfoundland. When Charleston became the capital of South Carolina in 1733, Governor Thomas Tryon decided that Port Royal would be within his jurisdiction so he ordered General James Moore to build a military fort there. Moore completed Fort Charles in 1735 and named it after his friend Charles Townshend (later 1st Duke of Cornwall). In 1736, Tryon moved the government from Charleston to Savannah because he felt that Charleston was becoming too powerful under British rule. In 1814, Confederate forces landed at Beaufort Harbor after their attack on Fort Sumter in South Carolina led by General Robert Ewell Jr.. Afterburner torpedoes destroyed most of Fort Sumter before its defenders could fire back resulting in nine deaths including Ulysses S Grant who led Operation Hudson into Beaufort Harbor specifically to capture Ulysses S Grant’s bodyguard which he could then use as evidence against him at trial!
