The United States Air Force (USAF) has a rich military and aerospace history dating back to World War II. The USAF was founded on September 18, 1947 as the American Defense League in order to increase patriotic fervor and opposition to the Soviet Union. Today, the USAF is one of the most powerful militaries in the world with over 1,500 bases worldwide. One of the earliest air forces in America was the United States Army Air Forces (USAAAF). It was formed on April 12, 1941 by combining Headquarters FirstAir Forces and all subordinate commands of Army Aviation Command. On July 8, 1942, General Carl Spaatz became Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces Europe (AEF) and activated USAAAF Ninth Air Force to serve as an escort for bombers over France and Belgium. In early 1943, Ninth Air Force began operations from England as part of Operation Torch which aimed to overthrow Italian dictator Mussolini. After successfully engaging German fighter aircraft during Operation Market Garden on September 10th 1944, Ninth Air Force helped lead strategic bombardment campaigns against Germany until May 1945 when it withdrew from combat status underOSS command due to lack of resources. The RAF assumed control of Tenth Air Force which had been stationed at nearby RAF Northolt since 1940; Tenth AF bombed targets in southern Germany until December 1945 when it moved intoactivation at Rheims-Bruxelles Airport outside Paris effective January 1946 following US withdrawal from World War II. In 1949 reactivated Eighth AF at MacDill AFB Florida after being inactive for nearly two years because of budget cuts within NATO caused by Warsaw Pact aggression in Europe; major Tactical Air Command operations were conducted from this base throughout much of 1950s eastern Europe before transitioning permanently to MacDill AFB effective June 25th 1951 untilactivated again on October 15th 1958 regarding concerns about possible deploymentEMBERCOMPACIFICATIVES nuclear bomber forces overseas]]. During these years Eighth AF also flew some notable missions such as flying directly into Moscow’s Red Square during its first Tours there! On August 16th 1957 President Dwight Eisenhower signed Executive Order 13436 which created Tactical Airlift Command consisting onlyof Boeing 727-200C jet Airlift Squadrons operating out of Selfridge AFB Michigan while Tactical Bomber Command transitioned fully onto jets with McDonnell Douglas MD-10A/Bs beginning operational flights on March 9th 1958.]]. Withdrawal of all combat units except Strategic Reserve Fleet members began effective August 15th 1958 causing a halt in program development for both tactical airlift programs]; however considerable progress had been made with development and testing OFallenger Model 647 turboprop transports capableof carrying upto 40 passengers per flight[]. The Aeronautical Division of the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey operated from PORT ROYAL AAF during 1945-46 when its primary mission was to study strategic bombing techniques. The station closed again on 16 September 1946 and all operations were discontinued shortly afterwards.
Port Royal is a town in Anson County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The town's name comes from its location on the James River, about one mile upstream from what is now known as Fort Sumter. Port Royal was founded by Englishmen in 1753 as a trading post on the lower James River. In 1824 it became an incorporated village and was renamed for King George III of Great Britain after his visit to the colony in 1824. The town was platted in 1836 and named for Sir John Johnson, 2nd Baronet (1768–1847), British minister to South Carolina during the period of British rule over that state. In 1860 Port Royal became a seat of government for Anson County with Jno. Balfour as its first governor and Samuel Hance as its first clerk/sexton/manager. On February 10, 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell marched through town to attack Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant at Milliken's Bend two miles away; however, Confederate forces were routed and Ewell escaped capture before reaching Port Royal proper. The Post Office moved from Jemisonville to Port Royal on October 15th 1865; this event is generally considered to be when the mail service began between Port Royal and Columbia via boats downriver). After Reconstruction ended in America following World War II, many African Americans migrated into rural white areas across South Carolina because job opportunity had not improved since before desegregation happened; accordingly, much of downtown Port Royale remainedJeremiah Davenport Boulevard early black neighborhoods until recently when new housing developments have replaced most of these older homes which are still being used for African American residents today

Port Royal is a town in Charleston County, South Carolina. It was founded on the Ashley River by James Post and his brother-in-law, John Walker. The town became a Plantation Town in 1786 due to its location near the Ashley River and its rich natural resources. The town was chartered as an incorporated city in 1887. The first African American to live in Port Royal was named Jemima Taylor, born c.1795 in what is now Orangeburg County, South Carolina. She worked as a servant for white landowners before becoming one of their slaves around 1825. After her liberation she moved to Port Royal with her family and became mayor of the city from 1870 until her death in 1899. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S. Grant landed at Beaufort Naval Station on Long Island Sound and began his march up the coast of South Carolina preparatory for an invasion of Florida that would lead to the Civil War. On July 9, 1865, Grant's army reached Wilmington Harbor where they destroyed all evidence that Reconstruction had been successful and replaced it with Confederate rule under General Robert Ewell Callaway Jr.. On December 12, 1865 Union General John Custer left Fort Donelson behind during his retreat from Chattanooga after leading forces against Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest while supplies were running low; this exposed Union cavalry units attacking Union supply trains at Kennett's Farm which resulted in eight fatalities including two officers—the only civilian fatalities during the entire war. “Our fatherland cannot be divided between us more than it can be divided between these two armies” – Abraham Lincoln
