Port Royal is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Port Royal was made by Captain John Smith and his crew on October 13, 1629 when they landed on the modern day mainland of South Carolina. The original town was called "New Providence". The British burned it to the ground in 1740 during their expedition against Charleston. The new port opened up around 1760 as a result of development along the Savannah River from nearby Hilton Head Island. As trade increased with North America and Europe, English colonists began to settle here and develop infrastructure like schools, churches and hospitals. In 1815, during the American Revolutionary War, General James Fort Sumter surrendered here after leading an attack against British forces at Yorktown Bridge which resulted in more than 1,000 fatalities including many local militia members who were killed or captured. In 1822-24 Commodore John Duryea commanded a Squadron of HMS Warrior off of Port Royal Harbor to blockade French vessels sailing into Charleston Harbor for violating United States neutrality during the Haitian Revolution. This action helped contribute to South Carolina's independence from France in 1814-1828. Duryea also built Fort McAllister near present day downtown Port Royal as part of his effort to protect this important seaport from hostile Indian tribes living near by who threatened its commerce with Native Americans across the Savannah River valley. In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell sent Federal troops ashore at Mill Creek whileliesing through town towards Camden due to fears that Union forces would march through town and take control of the harbor - an event known as "The Battle At Mill Creek" which ended with Confederates routing Union troops and capturing two cannons (the only time federal firearms have been used against civilians in America). Aftermath saw several buildings destroyed including Fort McAllister which remained standing until 1959 when it was again destroyed by fire

Port Royal was a small town in the southern United States during the mid-19th century. It is located on the Elizabeth River, about 25 miles east of Charleston and 10 miles north of Myrtle Beach. The town was founded in 1814 by English settlers as part of a planned colony known as "Queen's County". The town grew rapidly after it was designated as an official port for the Carolina Railroad in 1853. In 1865, Port Royal became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America and remained loyal to that cause until its dissolution in 1861. As a result, Port Royal is one of only two towns in South Carolina that remain completely untouched by Union military action during the American Civil War. The town's history begins with European exploration and settlement. On July 16, 1814, Captain George Thornton sailed downriver from Savannah, Georgia with three hundred British soldiers and colonists under his command to explore what would become South Carolina. He named the new colony "Queen's County" after Queen Victoria of England who had granted him permission to establish it. The first white settler at Queen's County was John Barrow who arrived on October 11, 1814. By 1830, there were over 1,000 people living in Queen's County. Port Royal quickly became established as a major shipping point for goods traveling between Charleston and Wilmington across the Elizabeth River. In addition to its role as a port, Port Royale also served as a stop on various wagon trains journeying westward through South Carolina en route to points such as Missouri and Texas. Because of this importance, PortRoyal came to be known throughout much of southern America for its quality wines enjoyed by both nobility and commoners alike. By 1860, however, tensions between Britain and America had arisen over slave trade policies enacted by London while North Carolina controlled most of the cotton commerce within Africa via her cotton fields south of Mobile Bay (modern day Alabama). On April 12th 1860aves began when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter northeast of Charleston whileUnion forces were attending ceremonies marking emancipation Day (April 12th). This attack caused great damage to Fort Sumter which led President Abraham Lincoln to order General Robert Ewell not only bombardment but also capture or kill all slaves present at the fort if possible before they could escape into neighboring states custody In response to this provocation Union forces marched into Lexington Armory where they found more than 2200 enslaved Africans working on cannons used against Fort Sumter .In less than ten minutes General Robert Ewell’s men surrounded and captured almost 1000 slaves without any loss sustained from their own ranks .This event marked beginningof endfor slavery within Confederate States Although many people thought that slavery would continue unchecked despite this dramatic turnabout; events like this demonstrated how deeply entrenched slave trade practices were within Confederate society . Aftermathof battle showed public opinion that maintainingslave propertyand laborwas not sustainable longterm
Port Royal was founded in 1599 by the English colonists as a trading post on the banks of the Ashley River. The town grew rapidly and, by 1655, had become an important center for British commerce. In 1713, during the War of Jenkins' Ear, Port Royal was siege by Patriot forces led by Captain Jameson. The town was captured and burned to the ground but resumed operations after its re-establishment as a British settlement. In 1801, following the Treaty of Ohio, Port Royal became part of South Carolina and remained an important commercial center until its annexation by Georgia in 1833.
