Orangeburg is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1820 by Captain James Orange and his family as an agricultural community on the east bank of the Ashley River. The first permanent white settlement in Orangeburg was made by Capt. John Pope and his family on October 15, 1822, when they purchased land from Major Thomas Pickens for $200 per acre (1/4 share). The original planned site of Orangeburg included only a few acres on what is now Main Street and lots near present-day School Avenue and Ashley River. In 1824, Capt. Orange's brother Edward moved to orangeburg with his wife Sara and their four children after purchasing land along Ashley River northeast of present-day Springdale from Majors Daniel Boone and Albert Sidney Johnston. Captain James Orange died July 1, 1830 while serving with Company G of the First Regiment U S Colored Troops during a march against Wofford College in North Carolina; he had been promoted to lieutenant colonelarespite having no military experience when called into service. His widow Sara continued to live in orangeburg with their children until her death in 1848; she is interred at Greenmount Cemetery nearby. Captain James' son George also lived temporarily in orangeburg before moving permanently to Mocksville where he established a flour mill circuitously connected with that city's first grocery store (now known as Jukes Grocery). In 1832 LtCol George Washington White selected an acre lot situated betweenpresent-day Old Town Square on the south side of Ashley River towards Huntingdon County line and Pee Dee Road today's Depot Square off I-95 just north of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema across US Hwy 81 from downtown Columbia (near our current location) for incorporation as "Orangeburgh" under its new name; this action spelled "Ontonburgh" became "Orangeburg" technically effective December 6th,1832 pursuant to act 3 Geo 4 c 712 which provided: "That all persons resident within this State who were enumerated therein according to law previous thereto ... be entitled thereunto." However it should be noted that due process demands done by some residents challenging incorporation caused Governor Tryon 2 years later Order No 8 Geo 5 c 241 dated January 12th 1840 revoked charter so many residents then petitioned Mr President Tyler seeking reestablishment thereof prior to ordered dissolution November 30th 1840 without providing notice or opportunity for public hearing...a total revocation which continues even unto this day! A post office was established at orangeburg May 10, 1830 under name of Georgetown but changed its name to Springdale June 14th 1850 due lack of mail service being offered then compared unfavorably with Lexington Kentucky receiving same mail service thru Prestons Courier Line connection thereby necessitating change back March 7th 1861 pursuant to Act 11 USC §527 et seq.; however application for post office here still pending...Government Gazette No 57 April 1781 pgs 283–291 records delay because owner(s) desired more time "...to obtain suitable building & improve facilities" so finally appellation changed again February 25 th 1861 pursuant to Act 11 USC §527 et seq..still awaiting approval from Gov't since original application date! There are several theories about why Government Gazette Granted Approval To New Post Office Name But Still Hid Its Location: One theory suggests that Applicant Failed To Make Good On Promises And Received Too Large A Payment For Property Owned As Result Of Previous Application Which Made It Impossible To Obtain financing enabling erection&maintaining requiredfacilities; Another theory suggests That Owner Failed To Show Up For Appointment Morning Of Date Of Grant & Didn't Have Enough MoneyTo Cover implanted Postage Expenses resultant From Many Weekslong Delay Prior To Being announced So Address Was Still Hidden Until Found Out After Requesting Proof By Mail In ReturnFor Gazette Not being received... Both These Hypotheses Are Possible But Most Likely False Because Apparent Fraud Would Result In Theirbeing Verdict Denied & Postoffice Would Be Abandoned Before Any Investigation Is Completed . Orangeburg was founded in 1765 by a group of white men who were seeking to establish a new colony in the newly acquired land west of Charleston. The town was named after General James Orange, an American Revolutionary War general and governor of South Carolina. The first settlers arrived in 1767 and began to build their homes and businesses around what is now the town square. In 1775, Orangeburg became part of the original Province of South Carolina and was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1775. In 1836, Orangeburg became the county seat of Calhoun County. At that time, it had a population of just over 1,000 people. By 1840, however, the population had grown to more than 10,000 people and the city developed into one of the largest inSouth Carolina. The late 19th century saw significant growth for Orangeburg as both a commercial center and political hub during Reconstruction. In 1892, Orangeburg voters passed an ordinance providing for women to be allowed to vote at local levels within Calhoun County. The following year, they also adopted an urban planning ordinance which helped develop downtown into one of South Carolina's most popular tourist destinations today. During World War II, much effort was put into creating munitions plants in nearby Greenville but little came from Orangeburg due to its small size compared to other parts ofCalhoun County. Consequently, during wartime production no jobs were created in or near Orangeburg but rather in nearby Greenville where much needed munitions were produced instead
Orangeburg was founded in 1806 by James B. Orange, a freedman from South Carolina. The town grew rapidly after the Andrew Jackson Purchase of 1820, and by 1830 it had a population of over 1,500. The first courthouse in Orangeburg was built in 1831. The town's first school was also built in that year. In 1837, Orangeburg became a county seat and the first African American to hold that office was John Suggs. In 1861, while fighting for Confederate forces against the Union army, Orangeburg residents joined the Confederacy and were known as "Confederate sympathizers." After the war ended, many of these citizens returned to their former Union roles but some stayed in Orangeburg and continued to support the Confederacy until 1865. After 1865, most white people moved out of Orangeburg while black people continued to live there mainly as renters or tenants-in-possession. In 1907, however, grassroot activism led to passage of an ordinance providing self-government for black residents within white limits; this began what would become known as "the Black Reconstruction Movement." In 1938–39 local officials developed plans for an expressway through orangeburgh which never came to fruition because of financial difficulties; however, similar plans did come about decades later when Interstate 95 bypassed orangeburgh entirely
