The 1st South Carolina Infantry Regiment was mustered into service on April 12, 1861 and fought at First Bull Run, Antietam, and Sharpshooters’ Ridge. Afterward, they spent three years guarding Fort Sumter before being sent to Great Britain for duty as part of President Abraham Lincoln’s Expedition against Confederate forces there. In addition to its civil war history, Orangeburg also has a rich military heritage dating back to World War II. From 1942-1945, the city was host to two United States Air Force airfields: Hickory Gap and Brushy Creek Army Airfield. These fields were used by the United States Military Air Forces during World War II to provide support for Allied landings on Europe. In addition, Orangeburg also hosted several naval vessels during this time period; including USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Constitution (CV-4), USS Quinault (AKA Wahoo), USCGC Mystic (AKA Lark) and CSS Alabama (CVA 65). all of which participated in various operations off shore or within US waters

Orangeburg is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 16,045 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Orangeburg were the Spanish in 1565 and 1566 when they sailed up the Ashley River. Orangeburg was founded on October 12, 1800 by Colonel James Caldwell and his brother-in-law Drayton McLennan as a small cluster of log cabins along the Indian Trading Post Road. It became an incorporated municipality on February 22, 1824. On July 1, 1868, Orangeburg replaced Greenville as the county seat of Richland County. On February 14, 1886 it merged with neighboring Laurens to form Laurens–Orangeburgh–Oconee Counties which continued to be its official name until January 3, 1988 when it changed back to Orangeburg County. According to the US Census Bureau's 2006 estimate,[1] there are 16,045 people living in Orangeburg village (including 2villages outside of town), 10% of whom are African American;[2] 11% are white;[3] 5% Hispanic or Latino;[4] and 55% black or African American.[5] Of all residents foreign born (excluding those born within U.S borders only), Asians make up 9%, whites make up 6%, Hispanics make up 4%, and blacks/African Americans make up 61%. The percentage of married couples without children has decreased from 82% in 2000[6] to 66% currently (2005 est.). This can be attributed partially to increased choice among married couples for higher paying jobs outside of their home communities but also due to more recent changes in family law that allow joint custody decisions between parents opposing each other

In 1790, George Washington ordered the creation of a national guard to protect America's borders and keep citizens safe. The first national guard was formed at Mount Vernon in Virginia on December 15th of that year. The guards were initially made up of militia members from Georgia, Maryland, andQuebec. In 1933, the National Guard was re-organized into three divisions: the Army National Guard (AnG), the Air National Guard (AgnG), and the Marine Corps Reserve (MCR). Each division had its own headquarters and operational commands. The AnG was responsible for military operations within states while the MCR was responsible for all military activities outside of their state boundaries. In 2007, the Department of Defense announced that all DoD commands would be merged into one organization called "the Unified Command". This new organization would include both federal armories as well as state National Guardsman under one command. The move came about due to budget cuts and an increase in personnel requirements for homeland security duties such as counterterrorism operations and Iraq War veteran deployments. As a result of this merger, many units within the AnG were transferred to newly created brigades or battalions within "the Unified Command". Sinceactivation of Operation Neptune's Spear on September 11th, 2001 have increased activation rates by over 50%. Nationwide deployments have also occurred in support of domestic response exercises such as Black Hawk Down and Jade Helm 17 which have tested Patriot air defense systems and artillery batteries

Orangeburg, South Carolina is a town in and the county seat of Orangeburg County, South Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,718. The name "Orangeburg" was first given to this community by James Fenton in 1795. The present-day town was founded in 1868 by John C. Orange and named for his plantation on which it stood until 1899. It was organized as a city in 1898, but has never had more than 6,000 residents. In 2002 it became one of the fifty U.S. cities that were designated " Model Cities for Sustainable Communities". The primary industries of Orangeburg are agriculture and manufacturing; however there are also significant sectors including health care and tourism due to its location at the center of an agricultural area with many outstanding natural resources such as waterfalls and forests
In 1836, Orangeburg was founded by Welsh colonists. The town grew rapidly and in 1840 it became a post office with the name of Orangeburgh. In 1849, the town was renamed Orangeburg after General Andrew Jackson. On April 15, 1861, as Confederate States of America seceded from the Union, Orangeburg became part of Confederate South Carolina. It was one of the few towns in South Carolina to remain loyal to the Confederacy. The population decreased rapidly during the war and by 1865 only 9 people lived in Orangeburg.
