In 1820, President John Quincy Adams made Orangeburgh one of three towns in Richland County for which he appointed commissioners to manage affairs. At that time, there were only about twenty houses in town. The first school was organized in 1865 by Revs. Wm Halsey and Ebenezer Posey with twelve students; it operated until 1868 when it was moved to what is now First Baptist Church on Main Street. One hundred years later, on July 4th, 2000 (the date that local businesses celebrate Founders Day), Orangeburgh’s first fire engine arrived on Main Street just after 5pm; it served as the town’s pump until 1984 when an new pump station was built adjacent to First Baptist Church which continues to serve today!
