Orangetown, South Carolina is a small town located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 4,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Orangeburg County and part of the Charleston metropolitan area. The name Orangetown comes from an Anishinaabe word meaning "place where trees grow." The first humans to live in what is now Orangeburg County were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered fruit near present-day Orangetown. In 1672, English colonists set up a trading post on this site called Fort George after General James Oglethorpe surrendered at Monck's Outpost on May 8, 1672. This was soon followed by other English settlements including that of Plymouth Rock in 1736 and Stono Ferry in 1743. By 1800, there had been more than 30 English settlements in Orangeburg County. In 1801, John Dukes founded Dukes Land Company which developed land between Pee Dee River and Chowan River for white settlement. He named his company for his father-in-law, Jno.Duke, Sr., who had bought some land from William Tryon in 1775. In 1807–1809 Captain Francis Smith surveyed and charted much of what is now Orangeburg County while serving as United States Surveyor General under President James Kenedy (1805–1808). On July 9, 1810 Captain Smith entered into a contract with David Hill to purchase 1 million acres (0·8 km²) along what are now Beech Street and Meeting House Road from Colonel Samuel Johnston for $2 million plus interest free loans totaling $1 million over 10 years at 6%. Johnston also gave away 5% of the total sale proceeds to charity payable every year until it reached $50,000 ($20000 per year). When he died without heirs in 1830 his estate passed to his brother Daniel Johnston (1793–1864), who sold it back to Daniel Johnston’s son John Dukes IV (1800–1876) for $250 thousand dollars plus interest payments over 20 years starting January 1st each year until it totaled $4 million ($240000 per year). After World War II several subdivisions were made within or around Orangetown; however most development took place outside the limits established when Captain Smith surveyed such as West End subdivision off Beech Street which was established by developer Wernher Lyle Sprague in 1951 primarily because its undeveloped land made it an ideal location for a shopping mall which never materialized Johnston Center Mall opened on October 12th 1973 inside an open-air lot adjacent to Sprague Boulevard just west of Interstate 95

Orangeburg is a city in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 31,403 at the 2010 census. Orangeburg is the home of Clemson University and the state capital of South Carolina. It is also the site of one of the largest concentrations of Black Americans in any U.S. city. Orangeburg was founded by English colonists in 1814 as part of Spartanburg County. It became a town in 1821 and a city in 1865 after it was annexed by Spartanburg County from Yorktown Parish. The first mayor and council were white men and they held office for one year each before being replaced by black men who served two-year terms until 1875 when an ordinance granted voting rights to African Americans. Because most African American citizens worked outside the cities, theseMayoralties were not very effective at enforcing laws or managing municipal finances which led to money problems during Reconstruction period which largely responsible for plantation/segregation efforts throughout South Carolina during this time period; however, many White residents did relocate to new areas such as Greenville and Columbia due to job opportunities available there during that era (Foster & Hodges 1998). The African American community experienced significant economic growth following World War II due to military jobs created in nearby points such as Fort Knox, Kentucky and Charleston, South Carolina which generated more than $20 billion worth of economic activity (D’Angelo et al., eds., 2003). However, progress stalled after integration came about with little progress made on social issues like education or employment opportunities for Blacks (Anderson 2005). Despite these challenges over the years, Orangeburgh has seen some resurgence since its heyday including efforts to redevelop downtown areas into mixed-income neighborhoods; construction of Clemson University's main campus; support for arts programs; and increased access to public transportation within walking distance from downtown areas (Foster & Hodges 1998).

The rebellion ultimately failed, but it helped set the tone for future slave rebellions throughout South Carolina. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Orangeburg became part of Union Territory South Carolina. It remained under Union jurisdiction until Reconstruction ended in 1877.
