This reputation likely stemmed from its lack of major attractions such as markets or hotels—only four miles away lay Savannah proper with its dozens of these options. By 1865, however, Orangeburg had become one of the most populous towns in Pickens County with over 4,000 residents living within five miles of each other. A large influx of African Americans arrived to Pickens County during Reconstruction following the end of slavery. Many black men worked as sharecroppers on plantations in neighboring counties while also learning new trades and serving their communities as actors and educators. As part of this process, many black men moved into various towns and cities throughout South Carolina until they eventually assimilated into American society overall. For example, Booker T Washington moved to Atlanta after his release from prison in 1867 and eventually became president of Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University). Similarly, Fannie Lou Hamer was born into poverty near Macon but managed to achieve success both politically and academically before moving to Jackson Heights (partly due to her father's connections there). Throughout these transformations – which took place mostly among Black Americans – Orangeburg showed resilience throughADifferent paths taken by its participants while still maintaining strong cultural ties back home.
