Orangeburg, South Carolina is a town in Richland County, South Carolina. The population was 9,821 at the 2000 census. The name Orangeburg comes from the Cherokee word "Ochon" meaning orange grove. In 1819 General Alexander McGillivray founded a trading post here and named it after his friend and investor, Sir James McGillivray. The first white person to reside in Orangeburg was James Cook who arrived on an open boat from Georgia on December 7, 1795 during the Firstompany Expedition under Commodore John Cook. He landed at what is now called Orangeburg Landing on November 11th of that year with his family and began to explore this new location. He built a cabin here which still stands today along with some other early settlers including Drury and Hargrave. In 1827 Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Bledsoe established Fort Stono here as part of his efforts to Secure British Columbia for the Crown colony of Canada. On February 15th of that year he ordered Captain William Fenton to build a stockade around what is now known as Fort Stono Creek in order to control access by Native Americans who had been raiding local farms and villages since independence had been granted two years earlier. It is said that soon thereafter hostilities ceased between the American Indian tribes and European colonists living in this area until well into the 19th century when white settlement began again in earnest following President Andrew Jackson's famous Indian Removal policy which aimed to end centuries of occupancy by indigenous peoples across much of North America via forced migrations led by Anglo-Saxon military officers known as " conquerors." In 1871, Emperor Napoleon I of France ordered his army to stop at a small town in Italy for supplies, and while waiting for his army to leave he had some coffee with his General Davide Caracciolo. This began the first world coffee trade. The Dutch founded Java in 1611 and started trading with India, which led to their discovery of coffee beans in Indonesia around 1600. English traders also discovered coffee beans in Arabia in 1502. By 1795, java had spread all over the globe including North America where it was introduced by Sir John Averill Macdonald from Canada. From then on, various new countries added their own variations of this rich drink such as Ethiopian influence (more black than green) which gave it its unique flavor profile; French withdrawal from World War II (which caused an increased demand for vanilla extract); Italian influence (obtained through crossbreeding different types of bean) which gives us our flavorful Italian espresso drinks; and Mexican influence (canned tomatoes being added) which gives our popular mexican café drinks their characteristic sour taste.

Orangeburg was founded in 1785 by James Robertson and named for General Orange of the British army who had helped win the American Revolution.
