The first gourmet coffee shop in North Charleston, South Carolina was opened in 1978 by then-owner of the local Safeway store, Rick O'Neill. At the time, SC's only gourmet coffee shop was a small convenience store on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. In 1984, O'Neill and his wife started their own grocery store on Broadwalk Avenue near the University of South Carolina. The couple continued to operate Gourmet Coffee until its closure in 2003. In that year, they sold their business to Erik Lundberg who renamed it Lundberg's Coffee Shop & Cafe. Lundberg operated Gourmet Coffee until he closed it down again in 2006 due to financial difficulties.
North Charleston, South Carolina is a city in the inner-city of Charleston, SC. It is the largest city in the state of South Carolina and has a population of over 200,000 people. It was founded as a small town in 1797 by Captain John Cooke and his brother-in-law Major James Fenton. The original name for North Charleston was West Ashley.
