The history of the North Charleston Army National Guard began in 1898 when the United States bought land in what is now the city. The unit was organized on December 1, 1898 and first served as a militia company. On July 1, 1899, it became an infantry regiment and served in World War I. In 1921, it became an artillery regiment and served in World War II. The regiment was mobilized for duty in South Korea during the Korean War and participated in combat from 1951 to 1953. It retired from service on September 15, 1957.

The city was founded by English colonists in 1729 and has been home to many businesses and families since then. The earliest inhabitants of what is now North Charleston were the Algonquian-speaking Cherokee people. They arrived here in the early 18th century from Georgia and started trading with the natives. British rule lasted until December 1785 when South Carolina became an independent state under Articles of Confederation. In that year, North Charleston was incorporated as a town within South Carolina. It was only aftermath of the American Revolution that British rule returned here permanently – this time as part of George Washington’s Continental Army during the War for Independence (1775-83). During this time period, North Charleston experienced some growth both within its borders and beyond them due to its location at the mouth of Ashley River – one of America’s most important shipping routes. This led to significant new construction projects throughout those years including harbor improvements and an enlargement ofthe municipal square (now called State Street). In addition to its strategic position at sea level between Savannah/Atlanta to the south and Charlotte/Fayetteville to the north – among other things – Ashley River helped make North Charleston one of America’s most prosperous cities during this period. During these years it boasted large warehouses filled with raw materials needed for manufacturing along Interstate 95; luxurious homes built for high society; impressive churches such as St John’s Episcopal Church; lavish balls given by patrons such as Burr King (founder of Bankers Trust); top-notch whitesmith shops; breweries such as Gourdine & Wilsons Brewery;factories making shoes, hats, coats etc.; schools teaching trades such as tailoring or shoemaking; hospitals providing care for soldiers who fought in wars abroad or post-Civil War Reconstruction efforts here at home; etc.; all while still maintaining much traditional Anglo culture present here today including music playing in streetside taverns (known locally as “juke joints”), outdoor basketball games on courthouse lawns (much like what takes place today at Jordan Hill Park), Sunday morning services at Lutheran church properties near downtown followed by picnics on land leased from landowners across Ashley River……Today there are few if any traces remaining from these earlier days although commercial development continues unabated along I-95 corridor adjacent Ashley River….. Although economic conditions have changed significantly over time northeastern suburbs Damascus Blvd., Goose Creek Rd., Forest Hills Dr., Lowry Rd., Golden Triangle Ct., Meadowbrook Dr., High Point Drvillage have become more distressed economically than central portions [of]NorthCharleston….. A Brief History: The cityscape seen today around downtown was first developed during colonial times when English settlers arrived in 1729 seeking new land eastward following their victory over Native Americans in independence warfare three decades prior. While initial development centered around Ashley Riverfront developments activity shifted inland towards later Cain Square locations before returning back out into open water along future Cain Square boundaries circa 1800 where government buildings currently stand today….Government buildings located Downtown began serving anew after being constructed following Provincial Reorganization Act1800 which reduced number or counties within Province…. further development occurred primarily along Clinton Avenue thru Government Buildings District which included residences erected mostly Prior To 1830…. Other notable landmarks located Downtown during Colonial Period include First Presbyterian Church which stands extant even though parts burned down c1805… Second Baptist Churchwhich stood until 1838 when it too fell victim to fire* Third BaptistChurch was completed but destroyed by fire c1850 Fourth PresbyterianChurchwas dedicated October 15th 1861 but remains standing* Methodist Episcopal Churchbegan service September 1st 1833 adjacent current Masonic Temple* Presbyterian ChapelcompletedOctober 15th 1861* African Methodist Episcopal Zion CongregationalChurch completedMarch 25th 1888…." * Note: Third BaptistChurch may not actually have ever been erected because third party ownership rights expired 3 years prior
The area now known as North Charleston was first inhabited by the Cherokee people. The first white families to arrive in this area were the Alston family, who arrived in 1805. In 1822, a group of English settlers called the Hardees bought land around what is now North Charleston from the Cherokees. The town slowly grew and began to be known as a center for trade and industry. By 1830, North Charleston had a population of around 100 people. In 1861, South Carolina seceded from the United States and became an independent country. This caused a lot of change in North Charleston and other parts of South Carolina. For example, businesses that depended on goods coming into and out of America stopped doing business because they didn’t have access to money or resources anymore. Additionally, many residents left North Charleston for better opportunities in Confederate territory. Today, North Charleston is a thriving community with many different businesses and activities available to its residents. It has also become known for its rich cultural history which includes some amazing things like being home to one of the largest Native American collections in the United States!
