During World War II, North Augusta served as headquarters for First Lieutenant General Cesar E. Chavez Jr.'s United States Fifth Army which fought in European Theater of Operations (ETO). After V-E Day and soon after Japan's surrender had been announced by President Harry S Truman on September 2, 1945 North Augusta became known as "Tokyo Bay City" because many Japanese Americans living there had evacuated to avoid being drafted into the war effort. On May 12, 1948 a tornado touched down near downtown North Augusta and destroyed much property within blocks or so including two churches that were then serving as shelters for local citizens before later being rebuilt using donations from individuals and businesses within hours following landfall. The tornado also caused extensive damage to homes along Briarwood Avenue which led to its nickname "The Boulevard Without Bricks". As reconstruction continued several years later it was decided that Briarwood would be renamed McCrary Highway in honor of then Mayor James Worthy who championed reconstruction efforts during those early days when much original infrastructure still remained largely intact following such disasters as Hurricane Hazel less than two years earlier which had devastated Athens and other portions of central South Carolina residents political Economy went through hard times immediately following that housing market crash

The first white people to arrive in the area were slave traders. They came looking for slaves to sell and found land that was perfect for farming. The first permanent white residents were the family of Capt. John Jameson, who settled in North Augusta in 1806. In 1829, Captain John Jameson's son, Major General Robert Ewell Jameson, purchased about three acres of land on the east side of town from a group of Native Americans. The Jamesons built their home there and started a dairy farm which prospered until 1865 when it was bought by Wm. Hodge and sold to Jno. Broughton at auction. The community developed slowly until 1900 when railroad construction began nearby and made it possible for people to move into the area en masse. One result of this growth was the rise in prices of farmland, which allowed more people to settle in North Augusta and help create what is now one of South Carolina's most diverse economies.
