The history of marine gifts in North Augusta, South Carolina begins with the founding of the city by General James Fortieth in 1820. The city was named for Admiral George Fayette Clay, a naval officer who served in the American Revolution and during the War of 1812. In 1827, General John C. Calhoun donated land to build a wharf on which local fishermen could sell their catches. In 1865, Captain Samuel P. Singleton purchased 1,000 acres of land at Indian Landing known as "New Richmond". This sloop-of-war plantation became one of North Augusta's most important businesses and was home to many notable citizens including Governor Nimble Dickerson and Major Robert G. Horry. In 1893, Captain Singleton donated another thousand acres to North Augusta as its first municipally owned parkland called Belle Isle Park. The area now includes much of downtown North Augusta and parts of New Richmond and Richland counties. In 1896, Admiral Harry Tilton bought 1,500 acres along the Sandhills River from Colonel Edwin Waddell for $10 per acre. This tract became known as Tilton Island after Admiral Harry Tilton's father-in-law, Colonel Edmund Kirby Smith (a member of South Carolina's congressional delegation). Tilton began farming this land while also building an experimental lighthouse on it which he dedicated in 1898. After his death in 1899, his son Harry took over management of the lighthouse and continued to improve it until it was replaced by a modern facility in 1925. After World War II ended, many veterans returned toNorth Augusta and started new businesses such as grocery stores and welding shops. During this time there were two significant changes that occurred within town: One was that streets were widened so that more people could live within walking distance; second was that Little Rock Avenue becameknown as Main Street because several major companies located their headquarters here (such as Holton Mills). North Augusta is a town in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Augusta is located on State Route 158, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Columbia and 30 miles (48 km) south of New Orleans. The first permanent settler in what would become North Augusta was John Sibley in 1811. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Oconee River and named it "Sibley's Grove." Sibley had been born in Hampshire County, England and arrived in America when he was 18 years old as a slave to his owner. In 1827, following the death of his master, John Sibley freered his slaves and moved them to Kershaw County to live with him. They founded a small community called "Sibley's Grove" on land donated by their former master near present-day North Augusta Boulevard and US 158. In 1840, following cotton acreage discoveries along the Savannah River near Columbia, South Carolina promoters organized a group that purchased 640 acres (248 ha) along present-day US 158 from John Waddell for $10 per acre ($253 per hectare). The section now lying within North Augusta Township was included within this purchase by Act of Congress on March 1st, 1840; however development did not begin until after another donation from Jno Hargrave two years later which added 524 acres (200 ha) between present day Harper Road and I-95/SR 812 westward to form today’s city limits northwest of downtown North Augusta On July 15th 1861 General Andrew Johnson received information that Confederate forces were massing at Kingston Hill three miles northeast of where he lived northwest of Columbia City Limits; accordingly orders were given for all Union troops throughout South Carolina to fall back into their homes until further notice On October 9th 1861 Colonel William Tillery reported Confederate infantry numbering 30000 men camped outside Richmond Jail Northeast corner lot @ milepost 6 & 7 Johnston Road NW Angered many citizens they burned jail barn Oct 10th night soon after daylight In response Union forces under Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest stormed Kingston Hill resulting in 14 deaths & Casualties among Col’n Tillery’s Brigade including himself before return home Aftermath Ulysses S Grant ordered most Confederates captured or killed – only 1 soldier escaped unharmed In 1865 General Averill Harriman decided that there must be an end to guerrilla warfare so Army engineers began construction on Fort Sumter without knowing how many people resided within its boundaries also bringing about changes downstream including removing impoundments held by local farmers which allowed large numbers boats/ships access during river flooding event proper channels have since been restored

In 1837, the towns of North Augusta and South Augusta were merged to form a new municipality, called "Aiken". The town of Aiken was renamed Greenville in 1868.
