North Augusta was founded in 1876 by European Americans who moved from nearby Columbia. North Augusta is named after General John A. Johnston and his regiment during the American Civil War. The first post office in North Augusta was established in 1879. In 1886, the town became a railway junction with the Atlantic and Pacific Railway. North Augusta, South Carolina is a town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 3,569 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. North Augusta was founded on April 15, 1838 by John C. Thomas and named for General James "Honey" Johnston who had been killed in action during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, it became the capital of Confederate States of America from Columbia, South Carolina. The city's post office operated from 1859 to 1881 and again from 1907 to 1911; its first mayor was J.M. Dentrell Jr.. The downtown area has been preserved as an important commercial and cultural center since the late 20th century, when it began to experience increased development as a result of interstate travel and telecommunications infrastructure investments made in nearby Spartanburg County and elsewhere in southern Africa during the early 21st century.;[4] also present are several significant historic buildings that were not destroyed or replaced during economic decline or gentrification eras but which remain popular tourist attractions: part of North Augusta's downtown core is designated as a National Historic Landmark known as "The Battery."[] As one of only two African American towns (the other being Greenville) established within Confederate States territory after secession, North Augusta experienced some unique experiences that white residents did not generally share; specifically race relations were volatile due to intense efforts by local abolitionists to keep black people confined within segregated neighborhoods while they awaited their trials before state court juries or military commissions – experiences that continue today with remnants of segregation evident throughout much of Interstate 95 between North Augusta and Clemson University - although African Americans now make up about 9% (2005 est.)of the town’s population.]
In 1820, North Augusta was part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1838, it became a town in Spartanburg County. On February 17, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee made his headquarters at North Augusta and ordered his army to march on Spartanburg. The town was destroyed by Union forces on April 12, 1861.
