Newberry is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 582 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newberry's ZIP code is 27813. Newberry was laid out on May 12, 1811 by John Dutton and named for Captain James Newberry who had been killed at Monckton's Bluff during the Indian War in 1775. The first settler to arrive in what is now Newberry was Ebenezer Goodloe who arrived about 1800. The post office at Newberry was established on October 6, 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on March 24, 1853. The first store in what is now Newberry was built by Jno Wigglesworth on December 10, 1830. In 1834 new stores were built by Thos Hargrave and Geo Aiken with brick buildings which are still standing today. In 1840 Isaac McCoy started a blacksmith shop which still stands today along with several other businesses including a bank (1848), grocery (1867), hotel (1912) and doctor (1914). In 1861 Drury Cottage became the first home of Spartanburg County when it was donated by Colonel Charles Dickens to provide housing for county employees while he served as its Superintendent of Education from 1861-1865. After his death the cottage went into private hands and has been visited only occasionally since then although some parts have been restored to their original condition such as the kitchen where Mrs Dickens cooked her meals before she moved into Number 11C during World War II due to air raids that destroyed much of downtown Spartanburg . After Reconstruction African Americans began arriving in significant numbers beginning around 1870 they set up homes near Old Fort Moultrie starting near Main Street and West River Road eastward until eventually reaching what is now Newton Avenue just north of US 21W within walking distance of most jobsites prior to white settlement building expanding beyond these areas making it difficult or impossible for blacks to integrate without violence or legal challenges; this pattern continued until after World War II when newly developed suburban areas closer to job sites opened up making integration much easier overall though there continue to be occasional conflicts over access to key services such as public schools ). Many of theseulators took advantage of this opportunity and left their slaves behind in Newberry. Despite these challenges, Newberry continued to grow and prosper over time. In 1876, Mayor William Hinson proclaimed January 1st "JohnNewbery Day" in honor of Captain John Newberries contributions to local culture and history. In 1990-1991, Hurricane Hugo caused significant damage to many buildings within town limits; however, little© changed overall as most businesses reopened quickly after repairs were made necessary by state regulations outlawing such damage from being done without proper permits .
