The Lambert family has been influential in local politics for many years, first coming to prominence through their ownership of land in central Newberry and later through their roles as Mayor ( 1951-1960) and City Councilman (1967-1971). In recent years, other prominent residents include businessman Lamar Hunt Sr., developer Eddie Rayburn Jr., singer Lenny Bruce, former U S Senator Strom Thurmond III, author June Cooley and musician Ronnie Dunn. Newberries rich agricultural history includes such products as hay, pecans, cornmeal and cotton; its downtown also features several large commercial buildings dating back to the early 1800s including a drugstore/ hardware store/frame shop that still stands today called "The Drug Store", which served as predecessor to current day Giant Eagle convenience stores within walking distance of one another across Main Street

Newberry, South Carolina is a small town located in Pickens County, South Carolina. It is the county seat of Pickens County and home to the Newberry Library. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. Newberry was named for General James Pemberton Newberry who fought in the American Revolution. Newberry was founded in 1824 by Colonel Isaac Newton and Mrs. Anna Gist as a Methodist church settlement on land donated by Dr. Benjamin Banneker. In 1827, Hosea Sprigg moved from nearbyunswersville to start a blacksmith shop and store in what would become Newberry. Sprigg's store became known as "The Blacksmith Shop". In 1830, Jonathan Edwards built a log cabin near present-day Newberry for his family and their slaves, which served as their farmstead until 1865 when they sold it to Nancie Howland Whitehead who operated it as an hotel until her death in 1938. After being bought by William Sallis in 1944, the building served as thePickens County Courthouse from 1945 through 2009 before it was moved to its current location on Court Street in 2009. Newbery also has several contributing buildings including: a small Baptist chapel built about 1840; two stores (the first built about 1825), one of which is still open; a schoolhouse (dedicated February 15th, 1830); A courthouse/ jail (1845) with additions made 1915-1916; and an old post office (1920). In addition to its historical significance, Mail Stop #2 – also known as Old Post Office – remains one of the most unique buildings remaining from early 20th century America due to its unusual design features and well-preserved condition. The building features gambrel roof tiles that are similar only to those found at some later stage along US Highway 421 between Asheville and Myrtle Beach.(See photos on this page.) Postal service operations were transferred from Myrtle Beach upon its opening at Old Post Office on January 16th 1912.(See photo below) mail delivery began services there officially on July 1st 1912.(See photo below) Other significant buildings include: First Baptist Church – erected about 1840 - now used for community events; Griggs Store - first business opened about 1825 - still stands today; Second Baptist Church - erected about 1850 - now used for community events; School House #1 - dedicated Feb 15 1830 - demolished 1907 because of wear & tear but continues to be listed online among historic places associated with that date.; School House #2 - Dedicated Apr 9 1861 ; Third Presbyterian Church Built ca 1870 Second Presbyterian church burned down Fourth Presbyterian Congregation buildin 1886 same architect ) Old Jail/Courthouse (1845) redecorated 1915-1916 with new architecture

The town had a population of about 150 people when it first became established, but it grew rapidly during the 1800s due to its agricultural production and its location at the mouth of the Coosa River. By 1810, Newberry had a population of over 350 people and began to develop into an important trading center for the area. In 1814, Newberry incorporated as a town and soon became known for its quality education and strong economy. In 1821, the town received Its first courthouse which served as its administrative center until 1859. During this time, Newberry also developed into an important cultural center with many talented individuals active in both local and national affairs. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Newberries saw some of its most dramatic growth as Reconstruction began in South Carolina. Many new residents arrived with new ideas about how to rebuild society after such a traumatic event. One result was that many businesses were opened up in Newberry which helped make it one of the most prosperous towns in South Carolina during this time period.
