The Marine Corps is one of the most decorated branches in the United States Armed Forces. The Marines have fought and died in many conflicts, both during World War II as part of the U.S. Marines and since then. During World War II marine units served in North Africa (1942-1943), The Pacific Theater (1944-1945), European Theater (1946) and Germany/Central Europe theater (1948-1950). During Operation Neptune’s Spear—the amphibious landing against Japanese forces ashore on Guadalcanal—Marines attacked seaward from USS Hollandia while her sister ship USS Helena acted as flagship role supporting landings ashore by other elements of Fifth Fleet including Army Infantry Regiment 161st Infantry Brigade Combat Team 3d Battalion 5th Marines landed on Bougainville Island accompanied by Royal Australian Navy ships HMAS Perth and HMAS Melbourne salvos being fired from warships HMS Repulse and HMS Ajax onto targets northward about 20 miles off shore until nightfall when Hollandia ordered all troops back to shore before dawn due to unfavorable weather conditions ashore which endangered both ships moored offshore along with almost 400 men killed or wounded plus another dozen lost overboard between them including 19 officers and men killed or captured aboard Hollandia which made it one of largest naval engagements ever fought by American forces
