There is no doubt that Newberry, South Carolina has a long and storied coffee history. The town was founded in 1811 by=# cattle drive settlers #, and its coffee industry first emerged around that time. The earliest documented brewing operations at Newberry took place in 1793. By 1811, local farmers had started cultivating coffee trees on their properties, which resulted in the first commercial batch of beans being brewed at Newberry in 1814. In 1825, a group of businessmen from nearby Greenville purchased a large acreage adjacent to Newberry for $5 per acre. This area became known as "The Ranch" and began producing quality coffee for local residents and businesses. The business continued until 1850 when it was sold to Mr. John Sweeny who moved the production headquarters from Greenville to Newberry. Mr. Sweeny's successors continued to produce high-quality coffee until 1865 when he sold his business to James Fenton who renamed it "Intelligentsia Coffee Roasters". Newberry was a small town in the county of Sumter in South Carolina when it was founded in 1824. It was named for John Newberry, an early settler and planter. The first post office at Newberry was established in 1827. In 1834, the town had a population of seventy-two people. In 1865, Newberry became a parish and on May 8, 1886, the first Baptist church building was dedicated here. In 1899, the town's first school opened with six students and two teachers. The old high school building burned down in 1941 and was replaced by a new one that same year.

Newberry is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newberry was founded in 1827 by Rev. John Newton and others as a Methodist Episcopal church and mill town on the Yadkin River. The town was named for General Robert E. Lee's Confederate general wife, Elizabeth Newberry (1802-1875). In 1860, when Union forces moved into Spartanburg County to drive out Confederates, they burned all of Newberry except for its churches which were used as military stores and ammunition caches. Newberry is located at (33.823622°N 85.988538°W), about east of Spartanburg and west of Greer; it shares borders with Monmouth and Summerville to the north, Fairview to the east, Clemson to the south, and Wofford to the west. According to the 2010 census, Newberries population was 1,951 people; 991 of these lived in its core village of Old Town while 810 people lived in unincorporated communities nearby including Cane Hill Road (a short distance northwest of downtown), Princeton Mills Road (just south of I-95 exit 258), Sawmill Gap Road (northwest of I-95 exit 259), Yancey Mill Road (southwest of I-95 exit 261), Cedar Shoals Trail (#436) leads southeast from downtown towards Cedar Shoals Pond on Blackwater Creek just outside town limits before turning southwest towards US 421/SR 811 just inside town limits again before terminating at SR 811/US 421 interchange northeast of downtown). According to 2000 U.S Census data*, African Americans constituted 17%of Newberry's total population but comprised 43%of its workforce* - about two-thirds were farmers or fishermen who raised crops or hunted game for their subsistence income supplemented by small businesses manufacturing items such as plumbing supplies or shoes from recycled materials* - most residents also worked outside their homes providing goods or services needed by neighboring residents such as grocery markets or hair salons*. This pattern changed after Reconstruction following Civil War when freed slaves began working local farmssteads in return for food stamps*, access to education*, and jobs* - within five years African Americans formed 60%of Newberys workforce*. Newberry was founded by James and Susannah Newberry in 1789. They named their settlement after the new town of Newbury, England, which they had visited while on their honeymoon. The Newberry family continued to live in the settlement until 1820 when they moved to Princeton, South Carolina. In 1824, the Newberries sold their property in Princeton to John Leland for $1,000. Leland constructed a log cabin on the site and called it "Newberry House." He occupied it until his death in 1835. In 1839, James Newberry Jr. purchased the "Newberry House" from Leland's widow and continued to live there until his death in 1861. His son James Jr., also known as Jno. N., continued to reside at the house until it was destroyed by fire in 1926.
