Newberry is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It is located on the southeastern shore oforry Lake, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Charleston and 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Hilton Head Island. Newberry was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1770. The town first grew around the large plantation of John Newberry. In 1827, a post office was established in Newberry, and it remained in operation until 1908. In 1970, Newberry became a part of Charleston County. The population of Newberry peaked at 5,000 in the early 21st century, but has since declined significantly. Newberry is located on the southwestern edge of Charleston County and is bordered by Greenville to the north and east, Summerville to the south, and Spanish Town to the west. The town covers an area of 39 square miles (100 km²). According to the 2010 census, there were 753 people living in Newberry proper and its surrounds as well as 298 people in nearby areas such as Spanish Town and Greenville Township. Newbery had two churches: Baptist First Parish which served African Americans until 1975; and Methodist First Parish which served whites until 1974. Baptist First Parish closed down after decades of neglect while Methodist First parish remains active today with some meetings being held inside Old Dutch Hall on Court Street while others are held out front on Main Street near Wofford College.
