In 1948, the town was renamed Newberry after an important local figure. Over time, the town has become known for itsapsidical farms and its annual Christmas market.
Newberry is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. Newberry is located on the east side of the Cooper River and near its confluence with the Broad River. It is bordered to the south by Greenville and to the north by Clemson University. In 1795, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down much of Newberry while retreating from Yorktown following his victory over British troops in that engagement. The first settler in what is now Newberry was Jacob Harper who arrived in 1796 from Augusta, Georgia. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Harper's Ferry." One year later he sold his land to John Leland for $200 dollars which he bought from Harper's heirs. Leland moved hither in 1799 after serving as a midshipman in HMS Resolution during the American Revolution. He farmed here until his death in 1807 at age 73 years old. His son-in-law Elijah Butler also farmed here until his death in 1827 at age 60 years old; both men were natives of Spartanburg County and had come here together as planters/promoters). After Elijah Butler's death, John Aiken purchased some of Butler's land around 1800 for $225 dollars (the total cost including building materials). Aiken then erected a small frame house on this property which served as his home until 1840 when he moved to Greenwood Village (now part of Greenville) because of poor health conditions thereabouts. From 1840 through 1860 many prominent people lived and worked nearpresent day Newberry - among them Jno Matson (founder), Gertrude Vanderbilt Edwards (wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt), CSSH Halleck, Ulysses S Grant (Ulysses S.), Wm Brownell (Businessman & Cotton Gin King), Drayton Chaffee (& Sons Co., merchants), Moses Asbury (Former President James K.) Polk). In 1868 local farmers Isaac Pemberton and Archibald Kelley decided to start a cotton gin on their property about northwest of present day Newberry about two miles upstream from where it currently meets Broad River; this venture failed but laid down seeds for future success when other neighboring farmers began spinning yarn using local forests for raw cotton fiber starting about 1830.. This process continued intermittently throughout most of antebellum times with different partners accumulating shares or acreage before new mills could be established In 1861 post office was established at "Newberry" after being organized March 10th 1861 under Act No 7098 entitled: establish Post Office Department within this State". For several decades mail service between townspeople & surrounding areas operated out OF THE NEWBERRY POST OFFICE LOCATED ON HIGHWAY 98 EAST OF TOWN AS WILL BE MORE DETAILED BELOW.. In 1935 an addition 2small buildings were added TO THE POST OFFICE ON HIGHWAY 98 NORTH OF TOWN..during WWII an additional 3 large buildings were constructed INCLUDING A WAREHOUSE...mail service ended circa 1965 due largely to high postage rates set by TVA resulting IN A SERVICE CUTOFF PERIOD.. Today only history books are delivered thru MAIL FROM NEWBERRY TO GREENVILLE THROUGHOUT SOUTH CAROLINA ..

Newberry, South Carolina is a small town located in the Asheville/Bishop counties of southwestern South Carolina. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Newberry is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in South Carolina and its history can be traced back to 1736 when it was known as Nanticoke and became part of Carteret County. It was renamed Newberry in 1827 after James Newberry, a U.S. Representative from Georgia who served in Congress from 1829-1832 and 1837-1841. In 1830, new courthouse and jail were built in town while also including a schoolhouse which continued to serve as instructional facilities until 1906. A post office was established at Newberry in 1800 and remained in operation until 1907. The first Baptist church built within the town limits was erected on land donated by John Pemberton about 1800. On December 20, 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley died here at age 78 after a long career fought against Union forces during the American Civil War. His funeral took place on January 10th following an elaborate ceremony including military honors for his burial site which included a flagpole with 25 stars flying from it due to his rank as captain leading 2 companies of cavalry during engagements near Newton Ridge along Iuka Riverfront on October 9th 1862; he had been commanding Major Brigade under Brigadier General Hethman marching south from Raleigh upon orders received from General Johnston that morning just prior to battle). Newberry has experienced some prosperity over the years with several large businesses being established here such as Macy’s department store (founded 1886), Coca Cola Refreshments (1901), Hilton Hotels (1904), IBM (1924) and Tyson Foods (1985). However, manufacturing jobs have also been lost throughout this time as many local companies have moved their operations overseas or closed their doors altogether due to economic conditions such asglobal recessionary conditions throughout much of South Carolina during this time period; however some recent businesses establishment include Homejoy(2005) and L&L Supply Hardware(2006). Today, there are few major employers remaining within the community other than Stonington Elementary School which serves grades PK-8 located adjacent to Interstate 95 exit #512 providing transportation into town for students attending surrounding high schools; Stonington Methodist Church provides services such as worshiping services 7 days per week while also hostingmany amateur music events each summer evening attracting numerous tourists resulting in increased business for both institutions combined; Additionally there is now an indoor golf course located adjacent to Interstate 95 exit #510 providing additional revenue generating opportunities for locals businesses associated with that sport thanks largely to efforts by Mayor Darrell Young along with volunteers working out of clubhouses adjoining that facility.;
