To meet this need, the Coast Guard set up a small gift shop on Hatteras Island which served as an office and store for the men and women of the Coast Guard. In 1936, a new Commanding Officer was appointed to head up all gifts within the Department. This new Commanding Officer organized and centralized all gift giving within the department so that it could be better managed and honored. The first Commander-in-Chiefs Medal was awarded to an individual who gave out over 1,000 gift items! Newberry is located in the Spartanburg County of South Carolina, about 20 miles southwest of Greenville. The town was founded in 1825 by English colonists, and it has since grown to be a thriving community with a rich history. Newberry is home to several notable landmarks, including the Newberry Museum and Library, which is open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm; the Old Post Office building; and Park Square. The square is also home to several businesses, such as Barnes & Noble, Papa John's Pizza, and Meijer. The town was originally named for Captain James Newbery who had served in the British Army during the American Revolution. After his return to England in 1795, he started a distillery in what is now Newberry. In 1825, he sold his distillery and moved his family to South Carolina where they built a log cabin near present-day Newberry Museum and Library. The new settlers were met with hostility from local Native Americans because they were not Indian bloods. However, over time they won over the locals by creating a strong economy based on agriculture and trade. In 1876, one of Newberry's founding fathers – Reverend James Gee – helped found Stonewall Jackson's Union Church which remains one of its most prominent landmarks today. In 1923, Drury Lane Elementary School was built on Park Square in memory of Mrs. Eleanor Halsey Dodge who donated land for the school - this made Newberries first post-apocalyptic school! Today, much like when it first arrived in South Carolina – Newberry offers quality education opportunities for its residents: from high school through college degrees are available at various locations throughout town. The history of the Coast Guard can be traced back to 1789 when the first coast guard detachment was established at New York City. The Coast Guard was organized as part of the Department of War on November 3, 1898. At its peak in 1942, the Coast Guard had a strength of 4,848 personnel. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has undergone many changes and expansions. In 1917, it was reorganized into six districts with headquarters located in New York City and Washington D.C.. Each district consisted of twelve stations which operated under general officers who reported to Chief Petty Officer in Charge (CPOC). In 1938, the District Headquarters were moved from New York City to Philadelphia and then to Miami Beach FL in 1945. In 1951, the Commandant General’s Office (CGO) was created within Headquarters Command (HC), concurrently with the creation of First Naval District (FND). The CGO functioned as an advisor to all naval commanders responsible for patrol operations along America’s coasts and waterways while also providing guidance on coastal security matters including law enforcement activities and emergency preparedness. On July 1, 1958 CGO became operational when Rear Admiral Harry E Jones assumed command following Vice Admiral John P Moran’s retirement from service due to health problems…. On October 1st 1978 Rear Admiral James L Glynn became Commandant General after serving as Deputy Commander-in-Chief Naval Forces Europe since 1974…..On September 30th 1986 Commodore John A Ziegler succeeded Commodore Edwin H Fenton as Commandant General effective October 1st 1986…… Commodore Ziegler retired on December 15th 1994…. After Commodore Ziegler's retirement there was no longer a commanding general for the Coast Guard

Newberry is a small town in South Carolina, United States. It was founded by General James Newberry in 1824 as a stop on the "Dalton Trail." The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of over 100 people. In 1836, Newberry became the capital of newly formed Ashley County. The town's growth slowed down in the 1840s as more and more settlers moved to other areas of South Carolina. By 1850, however, Newberry had shrunk to about 25 people. In 1863, Newberry was destroyed by fire; it is now part of Columbia Township.
