The history of the Newberry Army Ammunition Plant can be traced back to 1822, when General Andrew Jackson ordered the construction of a military arsenal in South Carolina. The plant was originally known as the Charleston Arsenal, and served as a primary supplier of munitions for the Confederate army. In 1865, following the Civil War, the plant was sold to Union forces and became known as Newberry Armory. The armory remained in use until 1971, when it was closed down due to budget cuts. Newberry is a small town located in the Charleston metropolitan area in South Carolina. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Newberry is home to two churches, oneMethodist and one Presbyterian. It also has a post office, a grocery store, and several businesses. The first settler in what is now Newberry was Nicholas Sprague, who arrived with his family in 1798. He built a cabin on the site of today's church. In 1827 Nicholas Sprague's wife died and he moved to North Carolina with his six children. His son John Sprague served as local magistrate from 1851-1856 and 1860-1864. In 1868 Elijah Jameson erected a frame house on land that now includes part of the square near the courthouse where many of today's streets converge. Jameson became an early cotton planter in this area, growing up along what are now Tryon and Phillips Streets. His plantation extended down Tryon Street to present day Main Street (now Elmwood Avenue). In 1865 Union General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Newberry while marching through SC during his western march across America; upon returning home he ordered all plantations closed within ten miles of Charleston so that they could be inspected for compliance with military regulations governing black slavery or "Emancipation." After Sherman's visit white planters began to re-open their plantations but by 1870 most were abandoned because of economic factors such as low prices for cotton due to overproduction caused by continued African slave labor throughout the United States; however some remain until this day as golf courses or vacation homes for wealthy visitors from nearby Hilton Head Island

However, by 1975, the population had decreased to 50 people due to various factors including development on the outskirts of town and increased competition from neighboring municipalities.
