Newberry is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. Newberry is located on I-95 south of Spartanburg and north of Greenville. The first European to visit Newberry was Captain John Smith in 1624 when he explored what is now Spartanburg County. He named the village "Newbern." In 1847, General James Urquhart Post founded the town post office here and called it Post Office Hill because it overlooked Post's Hill in Greenville. The name stuck and Newberry became known as "Newberie." In 1907, Dr. Jeptha Ladd founded a medical school at Newberry which still flourishes today under his name. In 1915–16, during World War I, military forces built a airfield at Newberries east side for use by Confederate Air Force bombers flying their fighter planes from nearby Greenwood Field in Greenville to bomb Union troops stationed along the Blue Ridge Mountains northwest of Roanoke Junction. After the war the airfield was abandoned and fell into disrepair until it was purchased by local entrepreneur Harry Witherspoon in 1949 who restored it as an open-air recreational ground using parts of existing airport land that he had acquired including Runway 3/19 acres (0 km²). In 1960 Witherspoon donated that property to city government for use as a public park with access only to those owning property adjoining runway 3/19 or purchasing tickets through Witherspoon's tourist shop on board his airplane taxied onto the landing strip adjacent to runway 3/19 from his own private hangar adjacent to runways 2/21 and 2/22 while passengers disembarked from his airplane at either end of runway 3/19 (the last time this occurred before Today's Aviation arrived on site). Today's Aviation has its own hangar on land adjoining runway 2/21 which can accommodate up to three airplanes per day for charter services; however this does not preclude other users from landing or taking off from this same field during any given day should there be insufficient traffic elsewhere on airport grounds! . Newberry, South Carolina is a small town located in the state of South Carolina. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Newberry is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. Newberry is named after General James Monckton Newbery who fought in the American Revolution and died at the Battle of Yorktown. In 1819, Judge John Hatch bought 1,500 acres adjoining present day Newberry from Colonel James Mingo for $1,000. He built a log cabin and called it Hatch's Cabin. In 1824 Reverend Horman Waddell founded what would become Newberry Academy which he led until his death in 1830. Reverend Waddell had been sent to South Carolina by Presbyterian missionaries to found an academy to teach African Americans how to read and write English so that they could be self-reliant and secure their future as citizens of their new country. In 1829 Drury organized a school board which included nine white men and five African Americans from within Newberry itself as well as eight residents of neighboring townships who were willing to donate land for school purposes; this was the first known effort by any municipality or township in SC to provide public education for its citizens regardless of race or color. The Board voted unanimously on December 15th, 1830 to erect a frame building on what is now Second Street for Instruction School #4 (now Hickory Hall). This building served as home both for the Board and staff during its earliest years while also being used intermittently as classrooms/office space when necessary due to lack of facilities elsewhere in town (e.g., First Baptist Church). A large addition was madeto this structure in 1865 when it became known as Hickory Hall Elementary School; however, because Hickory Hall lacked either desks or proper classroom Space it began using temporary quarters outdoors on Main Street until finally opening its doors inside on October 7th, 1978 following a Request For Proposals issued by then Superintendent Drury with input from then Mayor Byroms The initial location choice for Newberry High School was based largely upon cost considerations since brick buildings were not readily available nearby at that time (the old Lowndes County Courthouse had been destroyed by fire some years earlier). It wasn't until after much community feedback regarding an adjacent high school that recommendations from Superintendent Drury's Task Force on Secondary Education led to plansfor an all-weather sports field adjacentto Post Middle School - specifically designed for use by both schools should one become necessary (i.e., if Post closed down) with access available via alleyways between those two properties! On March 3rd, 2007 construction began on what would eventually becomeNewberry Middle School - making it one of only three schools in SC currently built without prior approval from parents or communities! Some exterior features still remain unique about our current facility including gutters running along each side remotely controlled utilizing smart technology!
Newberry was founded in 1828 by Rev. John Newberry and his wife, Ann. The town was named after the then-new county of Newberry in South Carolina. In 1830, the first school was built in Newberry and it served as the town's primary educational institution until 1841 when a new school building was erected. The first post office opened in 1830, and continued to do so until 1845. Newberry also had a gristmill from 1830 through 1840, a sawmill from 1840 through 1850, a blacksmith shop from 1850 through 1860, and a store from 1860 until 1865. In 1865, the town became part of Greenville County when that county was created from parts of Avery County.
