In 1892, Myrtle Beach began trading coffee with Java and Africa. By 1921, the business had grown so large that it moved from downtown to a new building on Broad Street. Over time, the business grew even more, and by 1930 it was doing $1 million in sales annually. One of the company’s first customers was President Franklin D. Roosevelt. After meeting with Myrtle Beach entrepreneurs in 1933, Roosevelt ordered his private secretary Harold Ickes to investigate how best to improve American Coffee Export Corporation (AEC) operations in order to build support for American industry abroad. Ickes found that the city’s small batch coffee was a valuable commodity that could help AEC succeed both domestically and abroad. Shortly after FDR’s inauguration in 1933, AEC began importing small batches of Ethiopian coffee from Addis Abeba into America under license from Jaffa Brothers Ltd., an Ethiopian tea trader who also owned a processing plant in Addis Abeba. The popularity of small batch coffee beganto grow throughout America during World War II as soldiers returned home with supplies full of beans they had picked while on deployment overseas. By 1945, smallbatch coffee accounted for 10 percent of AEC’s sales revenue! Throughout the war years, MyrtleBeach entrepreneurs continued to produce quality coffees at their shop while working day and night shifts at their plant near Broad Street; by 1945 they were able to bring their process upTo date with advances made in bean roasting technology and storage methods such as pressing milk through cheesecloth filters before shipment).
