Ickes found that the city’s small batch coffee was a valuable commodity that could help AEC succeed both domestically and abroad. Shortly after FDR’s inauguration in 1933, AEC began importing small batches of Ethiopian coffee from Addis Abeba into America under license from Jaffa Brothers Ltd., an Ethiopian tea trader who also owned a processing plant in Addis Abeba. The popularity of small batch coffee beganto grow throughout America during World War II as soldiers returned home with supplies full of beans they had picked while on deployment overseas. By 1945, smallbatch coffee accounted for 10 percent of AEC’s sales revenue!
