The History of Military Gifts in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina goes back to the Graysons. General George Gordon Gray was born in 1814 in what is now Aberdeen, Scotland. He served as a lieutenant colonel and major general during the American Civil War and died at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1876. His son, General James Longstreet Gray III, also served in the Confederate army and was killed at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. General Edmund Kirby Smith became Commanding Officer of Confederate Forces in South Carolina after his father's death and he continued this role until May 1865 when he resigned to take command of Union forces. From 1865-1868 he served as United States Minister to Spain. In 1870 he married Lady Elizabeth Farnborough (died 1896). They had two children: Admiral John Addison Kirby Smith (1871-1953) and Lady Gwendoline Elizabeth Kirby Smith (1873-1964). After the end of the Reconstruction Era following Reconstruction south Carolina reverted back into a slave state with Jim Crow laws enforced by white supremacists until integration started in 1965 under Governor John Fetterman. The military began arriving in Myrtle Beach beginning with World War II followed by Korea and Vietnam before permanently settling here during peacetime with an influx of Marine Corps troops during Operation Neptune's Spear which ended Rhodesia's independence from Zimbabwe on December 15 1984. After that there has been an ever growing flow of service members both home tour soldiers then deployed overseas which can be seen through programs such as deployments for Veteran Day or Memorial Day Weekend visits from various branches including Coast Guard, Army Reserve troops stationed here since 1991 as well as Marines who rotate through every few years along with their families unit tours are also common events here often attended by Mayor Joe Riley who personally greets each serviceman/woman upon their arrival while mayor says "Welcome Home"

Myrtle Beach is a small town in South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Myrtle Beach–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Myrtle Beach is located on the south coast of Charleston County and extends into Beaufort County to the north. The town's name comes from an 18th century woman named Myrtilla who settled there as a slaveholder and trader with her husband, Captain Jameson. The local residents shortened their name to "Myrtle" after they acquired citizenship in 1900. By then, most of what is now Myrtle Beach had been built up as a resort town due to its position on the Intercoastal Waterway which connected Charleston and Wilmington, North Carolina. In 1915, General Motors Corporation established several plants in South Carolina while expanding its operations in other states including Mississippi and Alabama production sites for its GMC trucks and cars. GMC moved its headquarters from Flint, Michigan to Myrtle Beach when it opened those plants. The first plant was designed by architect Alfred Isherwood with construction starting in 1922/23 and lasting until 1927/28; it employed about 300 workers at its height but closed down due to World War II noise concerns. The second plant (designated WO-1) started construction in 1928/29 but never reached full capacity because of the war; it employed about 600 workers overall but no women working outside the home at that time In 1945 General Motors merged with American Ford Motor Company creating what would become Chevrolet (and later Cadillac). Chevy manufactured all-new Chevrolets here until 1961 before moving manufacturing operations overseas A new Plants were built during 1962-1968 called "Chevrolet Works" which produced products for automotive models such as Suburban SUVs Tahoes Impala Commandos convertibles Malibu CTS sedans Eldorados etc... These plants were considered Research & Development Facilities used mainly for developing new engines or transmissions for future Chevys Finally Pontiac divisions closed their doors here during 1969-1983 leaving only Chevrolet assembly line open which continued until 2006 When management decided to close this line again due to lack of demand however recent reports show that there may be some potential buyers interested in purchasing any remaining assets so stay tuned
