Myrtle Beach is a town in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,607 at the 2000 census. Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Carolina and has been called "The Venice of the Carolinas" for its many canals and Venice-like architecture. The city was founded by white settlers in 1835 as a port on Beaufort River. As a result, Fort Foust became an important Allied military base during World War II as well as an entertainment destination for troops stationed in nearby Naval Base Camp Butler (later Camp Lejeune). As commerce shifted from maritime to industrial growth throughout Charleston during World War II, Fort Foust’s importance declined until it was abandoned by American troops following V-E Day in 1945. However, its rich maritime history continues today with several restaurants serving up fresh seafood nightly within walking distance of downtown Myrtle Beach on King Street between Constitution Boulevard/US 1W and 95th Ave NW

Myrtle Beach is located on Hilton Head Island and is part of the Charleston metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Beaufort County were French traders in 1621 who charted a route from Saint Domingue to Hilton Head Island. James Winyard documented this trip for English traders in 1675. In 1729, Dr. John Stuart built his plantation on Hilton Head Island as an Experiment Station for Plantation breeding purposes with American stock from North Carolina. By 1800, there were over 100 white families living in Beaufort County and more than 400 slaves working on plantations owned by whites alone or mixed with black slaves. In 1819 Reverend Thomas Jeffries organized the Methodist Episcopal Church in Beaufort County and served as its first pastor until his death in 1830. In 1842 Colonel Robert Ewell erected Fort Ewell on Hilton Head Island as one of four military installations guarding against possible slave rebellions during the American Civil War (1861-1865). On December 12, 1861 Confederate forces attacked Fort Ewell while General Beauregard was visiting nearby Savannah; only minor damage occurred due to Union gunnery fire but many soldiers were killed or wounded. On December 15th Governor Alexander Stephens ordered all Confederate soldiery within twelve miles of Savannah turned loose without plunder or hostage taking; this order led to what became known as "the battle at Fort McAllister" when 1st Lt.(s) John Cushing and Private Joseph Hogg repel an attack by 2nd Lt.(s) George Armstrong Custer at Point Lookout on December 17th 1861 after which Major General Earl Rosecrans decided not to pursue any Confederate troops remaining in Savannah because he considered them "unlawful combatants". The Battle of Mobile Bay resulted when Union cavalry under Captain Nathaniel Banks raided Confederate batteries stationed near Mobile Bayou January 10-11 1865; these batteries destroyed most of Banks' force before he was able to retreat back into Georgia with heavy loss including six officers and almost 150 men killed or captured (Banks never reached Mobile Bayou). After the war ended, thousands of ex-Confederate soldiers moving through Georgia quickly discovered that they could not return home because their Paoli rights had been forfeited by orders given during the war - meaning that they could not own land nor vote in local elections anymore., so they set up camps along the Coastal Plain where they roamed free until finally being forced off their lands around 1880 pursuant to Ulysses S Grant's Reconstruction Plan following theCivil War
