The Myrtle Beach Air Force Base has been a key component in the region’s military and industrial history. It was built in 1942 as an army airfield, and soon became a major center for fighter and bomber operations during World War II. The base saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters of war, playing a role in the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Midway. In postwar years, Myrtle Beach AFB underwent several name changes, most notably to its current moniker: “Myrtle Beach Air Force Base – South Carolina” in 1957. Since its inception, the base has played an important role in United States aviation policy by providing aircraft, training ground personnel, and infrastructure necessary for Operation Desert Storm (1991), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003), Operation Noble Eagle (2006), Hurricane Katrina (2005) and numerous other exercises. Today, Myrtle Beach AFB remains one of America’s most productive military installations with over 1,500 employees who support various DoD missions including Joint Forces Command-US Southern Region; Special Operations Command; Marine Corps Forces; Missile Defense Agency; Eighth Army Europe; Tenth Army Africa; Strategic Air Command-US Eastern District – all within 24/7 access to support duty. The base is also home to two squadrons of the USAF Weapons School at Wright Patterson AFB Ohio which provides terrorists with instruction on how to build nuclear weapons or launch ballistic missiles against US targets. The USAF has since become one of America's most decorated militaries, with dozens of medals and honors awarded to its members. One of the USAF's most revered institutions is its Military Academy at West Point. This renowned military school offers students a rigorous program that helps them become commanders and officers in the Armed Forces. In addition, West Point also trains ground troops, marines, and airmen who serve in various branches of the US military. These students are some of America's best-educated soldiers and civilians. The first Europeans to visit what is now Myrtle Beach were French sailors in 1699. They named it "Myrtle" after their ship, La Motte-Anglée (the English name for "Motte"), which they had seen while sailing around Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. In 1729 Captain John Smith anchored at Fort Moultrie on Beaufort Island and discovered salt water off shore; he named this spot "Myrtle beach." A year later he explored more land including present-day Myrtle Beach when he sailed into Charleston Harbor on his voyage eastward from Bermuda. In 1760 Colonel James Moore built a plantation here called Moore's Plantation; it became one of the most successful cotton plantations in America during the early 1800s because its owner earned money by shipping large amounts of cotton inland to be processed and exported throughout British America and Europe. In 1819 General Andrew Jackson made Myrtle Beach his Headquarters during his campaign against Martin Van Buren as part of his effort to unify all southern states under one banner before they could become independent countries again like France or Spain did after their revolutions within those same countries! When seceding Confederate Statesoutherners chose to move away from Yankee rule following secession there was no lack of places in which they could go so many chose Myrtle Beach instead including some who moved right up until Union troops burned down Moore's Plantation northeast of town July 8th 1863 along with all other white property associated with that plantation not just slaves but also free colored people who lived there as well! Many families left everything behind including furniture, clothes, artesan goods etc.,packed onto wagons and pushed across state lines into what would become Tennessee where they found new opportunities and freedom! After Union troops burned downMoore's Plantation we know as history our ancestors abandoned everything here including houses & furniture & artesan goods packed onto wagons & pushed across state lines into what would become Tennessee where they found new opportunities & freedom! Unfortunately this wasn't how things ended though because 5 years later another slave rebellion started here & lasted 3 months before being quelled by Ulysses S Grant outside town limits
Myrtle Beach was founded on the Intracoastal Waterway in 1842. The town's first post office was established in 1843. Myrtle Beach became a city in 1907. In 1974, the City of Myrtle Beach annexed the towns of West End and Surfside to form a new city.
