In 1814, the Mount Pleasant Plantation was purchased by Colonel John Coker of Augusta, Georgia. After the death of Colonel Coker in 1825, the property passed through several hands before being acquired by General David Wilkinson in 1857. In 1865, General Wilkinson sold Mount Pleasant to Captain Edward Horry for $2,000. Captain Horry developed the land into a cotton plantation and allowed white workers to live on the plantations while their black slaves worked on agricultural fields outside of town. By 1895, Mount Pleasant had a population of 1,500 people and it continued to serve as an important center for culture and industry until the early twentieth century when it declined precipitously due to decreased production and competition from other cotton plantations throughout South Carolina.
