Although many people think that Mount Pleasant started as a small Indian village called Hahahaquahtseeykee, this is not actually true; according to legend, white settlers first discovered sugarcane here in 1799 and began cultivating it extensively around 1800-1801. The original name for Mountpleasant may have been Wofford or other variations on "Wineboro." However, by 1807 there were already more than 50 residents living here – most likely because Englishman John Ensign had come through this area with his survey party during the American Revolutionary War and found valuable land hereabouts for sale to speculators (the first permanent white settlement being founded at Beaufort in 1734). During Reconstruction after the Civil War, many African Americans moved into what was then rural South Carolina seeking freedom and opportunity following Reconstruction policies designed to help former slaves rejoin society as free men - some settling near mount pleasant while others relocated much further inland due to high costs of transportation (e.g., Wilmington) or lack thereof (e.g., Augusta). This group of black pioneers quickly became known as "Mountpaulians," although they did not all live clustered together like today's black community does around major city intersections such as I-95 or Interstate 95A/US 301/South Boulevard NW.). One reason why so few photos survive from this period is probably because most individuals who attended college either left for north America or died young from disease contracted during that difficult time: very few black people made it out alive after 1865 when all forms of transportation came available exclusively to whites only again! Mount Pleasant was founded in 1775 by Colonel James Moore and his wife, Anne. The Moore family operated a plantation until 1800. In 1814, the Mount Pleasant Plantation was purchased by Colonel John Coker of Augusta, Georgia. After the death of Colonel Coker in 1825, the property passed through several hands before being acquired by General David Wilkinson in 1857. In 1865, General Wilkinson sold Mount Pleasant to Captain Edward Horry for $2,000. Captain Horry developed the land into a cotton plantation and allowed white workers to live on the plantations while their black slaves worked on agricultural fields outside of town. By 1895, Mount Pleasant had a population of 1,500 people and it continued to serve as an important center for culture and industry until the early twentieth century when it declined precipitously due to decreased production and competition from other cotton plantations throughout South Carolina.
