Mount Pleasant is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located on the Eastern Shore of the Atlantic Ocean about 25 miles (40 km) south of Charleston. As of the 2010 census, its population was 4,663. Mount Pleasant is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,430 at the 2010 census. It had been part of the Uniontown–Lenoir City Micropolitan Statistical Area before it was dissolved in 2000. The first settler in Mount Pleasant was John Gregg who arrived in 1785. He named his place after Mount Pleasant, a mountain near Dumfrieshire, Scotland. In 1827, Commodore Nathaniel Chase sailed his brig " tackles" from Savannah to Charlotte and anchored off Cape Hatteras Island for supplies and passengers on his way home from an expedition against Seminole Indians. After spending two days ashore at Mount Pleasant he sailed away with his cargo of goods and people on July 4th1827. In 1828 Captain Isaac Broughton2 disembarked with 110 men and three ships at Mountpleasant Cove on what is now known as Bayou Roadstead Island for the purpose of exploring the new colony of Charleston Harbor. A year later he reported that he found no valuable possessions or inhabitants but noted that “the good land hereabouts” was worth more than any other spot on the coastline he had surveyed so far. Captain Broughton's party continued its explorations until November 1830 when they returned to Charleston by ship after finding nothing further to explore in this area. From their findings they developed plans for a new town site which would eventually become Mount Pleasant In 1831 Captain Broughton again explored the area around present day Mount Pleasant when he discovered a body of water which would later be called Byng's River In 1835 General Daniel Webster3 disembarked at anchor about SSW of present day Mount pleasant shoreline foraging trips along Byng's River before finally reaching Savannah where he took possession of some 7,000 acres (25 km²) east of Charleston . General Webster named the river Ashley after his friend Admiral James Ashley4 who also served under him during this time period aboard HMS Victory . This event led to increased development along Byng's River as white settlers began searching for natural resources not accessible through open country By 1840 there were about 375 residents living in six buildings within five miles (8 km) of downtown Portsmouth where coal mines were opening up throughoutcentral South Carolina .
