Mount Pleasant, located in the city of Columbia, was once a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town rapidly declined after the American Civil War and by the end of the century had fallen to a population of just fifty-six. However, since Mount Pleasant is located in one of South Carolina's poorest districts and has been almost completely rebuilt since its heyday as a manufacturing center, it has become an important local tourist attraction. The town was founded on August 16, 1770 by Tories who fled to South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. The original inhabitants were Loyalists who sided with America against Great Britain. Today most people in Mount Pleasant are descendants of these early settlers. The first mention of Mount Pleasant is from 1772 when it was called "Jeton". In 1810 John Ritchie wrote about "a pleasant little village on an eminence near Rock Hill" that he had seen while surveying his plantation in Columbia County. He noted that there were two stores and several dwelling-houses but no church or other public buildings. This information may have been based on an error as later maps show that there was a small chapel built here in 1822 which served as the parish church for both Upper Mount Pleasant and Jeton until 1853 when Lower Mountpleasant took over this role. In 1811 Nicholas Central bought land at present daySpringHill Drive and Old Hwy 177 south from John Gregg for £5 per acre (about $140 today). together they formed what became known as Central & Southern Factory Land Company Ltd., reaping profits from production at their various plantations including Mount Pleasant where they rented land from Mr Copley for tobacco growing between 1800 and 1830; also engaged in rice planting between 1800 and 1830; made clothing for Northampton County market starting about 1800; also operated sawmill beginning about 1800; mule teams brought goods to market; all this under one roof." James Aiken purchased some assets within Central & Southern Factory Land Company Ltd.'s holdings along SpringHill Drive within ten years following Central's death in 1827/28.: During this time period many new businesses started up around Columbia which would contribute to future economic development: grocery store started about 1840 by Dr George Washington Hardwick (this store continues operations today); blacksmith shop opened 1840 by James Aiken ; dry goods store started 1850 by Wm Fenton ; cigar factory began business c1860.; riverboat company active 181
