Mount Pleasant is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,878 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is home to Clemson University and the Palmetto State Forest. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Spartanburg County was made by Scotsmen on December 13, 1775 when they landed at Beaufort Island. They named their new land "Mount Pleasant" after the highest mountain peak in North America, Mount Hope in Scotland. The first store in Mount Pleasant was opened by James Moffatt on October 10, 1827. By 1830, there were six stores operating in Mountpleasant with a total of $2,712 in business revenue that year. Two years later, a post office was established and mail service began between Mount Pleasant and Columbia (then called Beaufort) for $1 per week. In 1836 a school was built located near present-day Clemson University for students of both schools which continued until 1881 when it became part of the Western Union School District system. In 1865 more than 1,000 people from surrounding counties came to Fort Hill during General Robert Ewell's raids against rebel forcesadeskween April 12 and 15 as part of Confederate efforts to quell slave insurrectionism around Charleston and Sumter County while also suppressing anti-slavery sentiment throughout the state of South Carolina. This influx of newcomers helped lay the foundation for future growth in Fort Hill including businesses such as Jardine & Pittman Wharf Company which operated wharves along the coastlines of Charleston Harbor; Wigglesworth & Sons Auctioneers which conducted auctions throughout central SC; Hartsfield & Brittain Clothing Merchants who served as departmental center for local textile industry; Pee Wee Coggins horse racing track which operated from 1865 until it closed c1910; Presbyterian Social Service Association which provided assistance to needy families through various endeavors such as meals out or relief work during times of famine or earthquake

Mount Pleasant is located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, and was first settled by English colonists in the early eighteenth century. The town began to take form as a village during the 1800s, and grew rapidly due to its location on a fertile tract of land that became known as the Mount Pleasant Land Grant. By 1860, Mount Pleasant had over 1,000 residents and was home to several businesses such as a cotton gin and flour mill.During the American Civil War, Mountpleasant sided with the Confederate States of America, but soon changed its mind after learning of Union atrocities. In 1865, Mountpleasant voted to rejoin South Carolina after the war ended. The town continued to grow until World War II when it lost most of its population due to wartime restrictions on travel and trade.Today, Mountpleasant is an important center for commerce in Spartanburg County and contains a variety of cultural attractions including an art museum, a library/, community center/, post office/, football stadium/park/, church/temple/, and several restaurants/.The history of Mountpleasant is richly documented with numerous artifacts dating back to pre-colonial times. One significant discovery was made in 1978 when archeologists uncovered evidence that Watauga Indians hunted mammoths across much of present-day South Carolina during the late Pleistocene period. A study published in 2004 found that many archaeological features associated with this period have been discovered near Mount Pleasant,, including remains of three campsites dating back to 870 ADand two stone idols from 476 AD
The first white person to live in Mount Pleasant was James McGill. He arrived in 1775 and started a small trading post called McGill's Station. The first recorded mention of Mount Pleasant was in 1786 when Colonel Johnstone wrote about "a place on the mountain called Pleasant," which he thought might be a hunting ground for his black troopers. By 1815, Mount Pleasant had a population of only 10 people. In 1821, Captain John Fenton purchased land east of Mount Pleasant from the McIntosh family. He named the area Fort Fenton and built it around an agricultural center that he had planned to use as a base for his campaigns against Native Americans. In 1827, Fenton sold the fort and its land to General Andrew Jackson for $10,000 cash. In 1830, General Thomas Polk appointed Major General James Hays to lead an expedition against Native American forces at Lookout Hill near present day Mt. Pleasant. The expedition resulted in heavy losses for both sides and no successful victories were achieved until 1836 when Hays finally destroyed all Indian resistance at Lookout Hill after weeks of bloody combat. In 1840, Fayetteville became the capital of South Carolina due to Jackson's decision that Charleston should not serve as the new state capital because its economy would be more dependent on slave trade than agriculture.
