Mount Pleasant was founded in 1741 by the Reverend John Middleton and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for Mount Pleasant on the north side of Charleston Harbor. The first store in Mount Pleasant was built in 1743. By 1800, Mount Pleasant had a population of about 150 people. In 1818, Lieutenant Colonel James Aiken purchased land east of Mount Pleasant from the Rev. John Middleton for $1,500. Aiken's plantation grew to include more than 3,000 acres (1,600 ha) and produced slaves until 1861 when it was sold to Edward Everett Hale, who renamed it "Mount Vernon". The first school in Mount Pleasant was built in 1827 and attendance increased to 50 students by 1830. In 1834-35, Drury Colburn opened a dispensary here which became one of the largest in South Carolina. When Charleston's harbor unseaworthy and unsafe for shipping during the 1840s because of bad water quality due to inadequate sewage treatment plants being installed at that time, many merchants turned to salt production as an answer to their problem In 1846-47 Captain Fayette Dixon made a voyage downriver from Beaufort with salt meat intended for export but found that there were no suitable shipping channels available so he unloaded his cargo at Mount Pleasant instead . This event is generally considered as the beginning of Charleston's commercial development . Captain Dixon also began giving lectures on local fish farming methods at this time which led him eventually becoming one of its most famous entrepreneurs
