In 1923, it became one of several schools established within Spartanburg County under state legislation designed to create educational opportunities for less well off citizens. The first post office opened in 1840; it closed about 1920 because mail service was improved by railroads and then telephone service made it easier to send messages without traveling long distances. In 1868, Colonel Mauldin erected a large frame courthouse on his donation land east of town square that still stands today as one of South Carolina's most distinctive buildings. It served as court house until 1978 when it was replaced by a new courthouse constructed on more modern facilities nearby.
