Mauldin is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,757 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in Mauldin were white farmers who arrived from northern Carolina in the early 1800s. In 1828, Maudlin's first post office was established and it served as a stop on the Spartanburg Railroad. By 1830, many African Americans had moved to Mauldin from surrounding plantations and townships because of discriminatory practices by the state government. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson came to Mauldin and ordered all black residents be deported (or "evicted"). This event is sometimes called "the Emancipation Proclamation." Many African Americans fought in the Confederate army or worked on plantations during the war. After the war ended, many of these men decided to return home and start new lives. Mauldin's growth began when businessmen entrepreneur James Sisson subdivided land around his cotton plantation in 1868 into blocks for sale to settlers. By 1870, Mauldin had a post office and two churches—one Protestant and one Catholic—and several stores including a grocery store and livery stable. A sawmill also operated in Mauldin until its closure around 1920 due to technological advances; however, remnants of that mill can still be seen today along US 1 near milepost 267 (SR-1). When Interstate 85 was built through Spartanburg County in 1980, portions of Mauldin were included within Greenville proper; however, most businesses closed down or relocated after I-85 became an expressway through town with less traffic potential than past routes such as SR-1 which connected downtown with rural areas outside of town borders. Today much of what once constituted downtown has been demolished or lost its use due to demolition projects underway across Spartanburg County but some remnant buildings remain including One Mississippi Place which serve as both an arts center for local artists as well as retail space for locals since reopening following restoration/construction efforts initiated by amateur historians organized under SC State History Museum w/ help from SC Museums Association & Friends group back in 2000-2006 https://www2a2a2a2aabcdefgagf7
