Lexington is a town in Lexington County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2000 census. The town was founded by white settlers in 1807 and named for John Lexington, an officer in the Continental Army. It became a city in 1865 and remained so until 1987 when it merged with Greenville to form the new city of Greenville. The first white settler in what is now Lexington was James Robertson who arrived on horseback from Tennessee in 1807. He named his farm "Fayette" after General George Washington's Mount Vernon estate near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1810, two other Scots-Irish men - Johnnie Rankin and Alexander McKenzie - also landed at Fayette and began trading goods with the local Indians. In 1812, Robertson sold his land to James Lassiter for $600+ ($ today). Lassiter then built the first permanent house in what is now Lexington when he moved into his present home on Old Fayette Road about 1 mile east of wherepresent-day Walmart stands today. In 1814, North Carolina passed a bill which prohibited slavery within its borders and this led to a group of Scottish-Irish people coming to South Carolina as planters seeking freedom from British rule. These refugees dubbed themselves "The Scotch-Irish Cattlemen." They brought over their cattle and started raising them here on their farms as well as selling them off back home across the border in Canada before finally arriving here during the American Revolution (1775–83). This initial period of settlement saw heavy planting with pine trees being especially important because they could grow fast without failowing; thus these areas were often covered with dense forests until recently due to climate change/oceanographic events that have destroyed many types of live oak trees throughout most of South Carolina since European contact! map_of_lexington_southern_carolina
