Lexington is a city in Lexington County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 25,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lexington County. The first people to arrive in what is now Lexington were the Cherokee Indians who traded with Europeans and found land here in 1775. In 1802, white settlers founded the town of Lexington on land that had been given to them by General James Horry as part of a treaty signed after Horry's defeat at Battle of Kings Mountain. The town grew rapidly and by 1825 it had 636 residents. By 1830, however, Lexington's growth was so rapid that it outgrew its original boundaries and became an incorporated city under state law. On January 1, 1871, the city limits were increased to their current size when Hickory and Richland counties were created within Columbia County; the annexed towns of Springdale (in Richland) and Greenville (in Hickory) also joined the city Limits on July 1, 1871. In 1865 Union general Ulysses S Grant visited this area while he was campaigning for president against Abraham Lincoln; during his stay he ordered General John Aiken to build him a house near present-day downtown Lexington for use as his headquarters during his campaign trail from nearby Nashville through this region. Aiken built Grant's mansion which still stands today – now used as office space for government agencies and housing for civil servants – across from what is now courthouse square in downtown Lexington. Grant also purchased 2 acres (0 hectares) northeast of downtown where he erected a small cottage known as "Grant House". This property remains today as Park Row Drive adjacent to Park Square shopping center east of Court Street in downtown Lexington). During World War II much heavy industry took place in post-war Kentucky including aluminum production at American Can Manufacturing Company west ofpresent-day downtown Lexington; these operations brought many workers into contact with local citizens who helped support wartime needs such as food storage and transportation supplies while they produced munitions or manufactured other war-related items such as tanks and aircrafts

In 1860, Lexington was a small town in the heart of South Carolina. It was founded by planters who were looking for a place to grow cotton and make money. The town became known as the "Cotton Capital of the World." In 1907, Lexington was designated as the capital of South Carolina by state lawmakers. The city has been continuously growing since its establishment and is now one of the most culturally significant cities in South Carolina. Lexington's history can be traced back to 1795, when a group of English colonists named Lexington landed on Catawba Island and built their first homes. Over time, other English settlers followed and, by 1800, Lexington had become an important stop on the Savannah-Fulton slave trade route. In 1828, American forces invaded South Carolina to overthrow Mississippi's slaveholding regime. When they arrived in Lexington, white residents were already protesting against African slavery. A campaign called "The Liberty Rides" began in early 1830 and ended with more than 200 Africans being freed at various locations throughoutSouth Carolina. This event helpedvinitate many black Southerners who saw free labor as an option during difficult times period (1830s-1860s). After America's victory over Mexico in 1846, many Americans decided that they should secede from what they saw as an illegitimate government - even though slavery continued to exist side by side with Mexican independence. Bluecoat Patriots — Americans who had fought for Britain against Mexico — also started migrating northward into South Carolina in search of new opportunities after the war ended. 1) On April 12th 1861 – just days before Confederate States surrendered at Appomattox Court House – three men boarded a stagecoach from Georgetown County lines near Charleston and took it down Highway 29 to Columbia where they sold passage both ways for $5 each; this act led directly to secession! 2) The result: two thirds of all slaves remaining within Georgia would remain within slave states including Kentucky which voted not to secede until AFTER Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation! 3) After Lincoln issued his proclamation freeing all slaves following Confederate capitulation on April 9th 1865: only 7% remained within states formerly under confederacy control!
