The town of Lexington, South Carolina is located in the southeastern corner of the state. The town was founded by white settlers in 1814. The first residents were men who had come to live on land that was donated by King George III. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 there were over 1,000 people living in Lexington. In 1838, Lexington voted to become a county seat, and it remains its current status today. The history of Lexington dates back to the early 1800s when white settlers moved into the area. One of these pioneers, James Caldwell, built a small cabin in what is now known as downtown Lexington. He named his cabin Caldwell House after himself and his son-in-law Richard Caldwell. In 1819, two men from Georgia named John Wesley Hardee and Daniel Boone made the trip down South to survey new land for their plantations near Columbia River Bridge. They named their new settlement Booneville after Boone's brother-in-law John Wesley Hardee. In 1824, President James Kaine appointed Isaac Newton Handy as commissioner for Indian affairs in South Carolina under Kaine's administration. This position allowed Handy to oversee some important Native American relations and help develop trade relationships with them. On October 9th of that year,Handy became aware of an uprising against British rule among the Cherokee nation led by Chief Little Turtle! After learning about this event from local scouts working for him, Handy immediately dispatched several hundred troops to try and quell the rebellion! Unfortunately for him, this venture ended with many Cherokee dead or captured rather than retreating into submission! A few years later (1828), another group of white pioneers arrived at what is now known as downtown Lexington from Georgia via boats on May 12th of that year! These men were members of the First Congregational Church which had recently relocated from Connecticut City Missionary Society station nearby on Ashley River Island! Many locals called this group the "Old Settlers" because they were7 years old or younger when they first arrived in Kentucky County! This influx of newcomers helped fuel growth around downtown Lexington; including construction of homesites along Third Street between Market and High Streets beginning in 1830 . also during this time period businesses began opening up throughout town such as grocery stores/cafeterias/butchers shops etc., which would continue until well into our modern day days . In addition ,the population boomed thanks largely to religious services offered at Stroudsburg Female Academy (established 1792) conducted by Reverend Driggs (1772 - 1840) !!!!! Rev Driggs was one half brotherof General Timothy Stroud (1745 - 1820), who served United States Army under George Washington during both military campaigns against Great Britain (& America)!! Additionally he also served as Bishoprick Superintendent Of Schools For A Union Parish In Charleston From 1798 To 1800 !!!!! By 1850 there were more than 300 residents living DowntownLexington !!!!!!!!! By 1860 there were over 500 residents living DowntownLexington!!!!!
